NC State, UNC, Duke, and Wake are a package deal. If you get one you get all, IMO.

All those hot shite recruits we (USC, UGA) pull from NC every year might go bye bye if a big NC school gets added to the SEC.
This.
Plus UNC fans are unbearable. Do not want.
Nc state or ecu would be better, but they would frick up the recruiting ties that USC UGA UT and UF have in the state.

ECU is only an hour and 40 minutes from Beaufort NC Outer Banks. PErfect 4 day weekend trip for an away game, get a little place in Beaufort you check in Thursday night, fishing charter Friday and boozing it up, assuming there isn't a named storm close by, then Saturday you go an hour and 40 minutes into G-Ville, their stadium is surrounded by tailgate lots similar to how WBS is now, but not quite manicured as well as WBS, but would be when SEC money comes in, people with their ENC bbq smokers wafting sweet hickory smoke in the Fall breeze, have a hell of a time at the game and lose your voice screaming at the ref, the fans would all be really nice and southern and friendly, then you head back to your place in Beaufort after the game and probably go straight to bed. On Sunday morning you hang out at the beach, play some golf, eat some shrimp and or tuna, fresh gulf stream tuna, extra mercury, fill a cooler up with fresh shrimp and ice Monday morning and drive back to your homeland.

A conference with too many teams fails to be a conference, at that point there is no identity at all.

You guys play them every year. It would just be a conference game now. SEC should stick to LA to SC geography.

I've said this for years, we really need to get Tom Selleck into the conference. If we need to keep it even we can add Dog the bounty hunter, but I don't know how well he fits.

If for new markets it would be OU and KU

Those markets bring nothing, a brand yes kU in BB & OU if FB, but markets just no.
Anyone that says Texas is ignorant of the cancer that is Texas. Best bets would be Va Tech and NCST though in a perfect case it would be UNC and Virginia.

Va Tech by far, if not them UNC

UGA and USC compete with Clemson for recruits and we win many recruiting battles because the kids want to play in the SEC and Clemson can't provide that level of play. You let Clemson in, bad for UGA and USC.
Having three SEC schools within an hour and ten minutes of each other simply dilutes the recruiting base and the SEC product as a whole.
ETA-
Imagine if I picked up Clemson and set them down in Montgomery AL and declared them a new member of the SEC. That would probably piss off AU and UA.

I appreciated this answer and it made as much sense as about 99% of the other suggestions posted.
There are really only 3 items of criteria you need to look at if you want to know who is going to get the invitation.
<> How well does the school fit the geographic and congruent integrity of the current SEC footprint?
<> What do they add in terms of a population base to the current footprint?
<> What do they add in terms of inventory for the SEC Network?
Oregon St. would not fit geographically, Iowa St and Oklahoma St would not add any population, nor would Ga Tech or Clemson.
West Virginia would add no population and no inventory to speak of.. (outside of 'couch burning cousin humpers gone wild').
Va Tech would add football and a new state of some population that fits the geographic bounds of expansion. Either of the NC schools would add basketball inventory and the same state metric as Virginia.
The reason you don't have to worry about "separating" these schools from their ACC brethren is simple, you can either make 20 million a year, or 50 million a year, which do you choose?

Drop Miss State (brings nothing to the table)
I love how these Ole Miss fools say this when in fact they are the one who have done nothing over the last 40 or so years. Go back and count the number of SEC titles won by State and Ole Miss in the big three sports the last 40 or so years before making stupid comments. I'll do it for you. MSU 15 Ole Miss 4. MSU also has 8 CWS appearances over the period, and Ole Miss 1. We have more NCAA tourney appearances in baseball and basketball by a lot. We have a Final Four appearance. Ole Miss has been to one more bowl game, but is the only original West team that's never been to the SECCG. Who brings nothing to the table?
