re: State - Will Mullen's ability to turn 2 / low 3 star players into real ballers be missed?

English is not his boy... I hope. Turn all the DBs over to Gray

I agree that he is never getting rid of Knox. But I rather have a great special teams coach than a recruiter.

ST coach - A+, turn around on coverage units was huge. Found Swain to return punts.
RB coach - A, he got every thing out of Scarlett
Recruiter - D, Whiffed last cycle at RB and is whiffing this cycle.

I'd keep Knox around 100% of the time. He 's just good people and good for a program

UF fans are pissed at Knox because Bowman is a Clemson commit. If Bowman was committed to UF, Knox would be everyone's favorite coach.

I remember how hard Miss State played when he was the interim head coach despite rumors out that he was leaving for UF.

I was reading your list and saying, "defense, defense, defense, etc." and then you destroyed my rebuttal with this:

quote:

I'm impressed by the consistent placement of defensive guys in the league.

Well done, sir, well done.

That's the thing: DM is not a defensive guy, let alone a guru of developing NFL-caliber defensive talent. State, like many other SEC teams, always has a defensive guy or two who has a set of cods when it comes to playing grown man defense.

That said, even though DM blew through the crosswalk at the Stone & Bully Blvd intersection while on a jog in a heavy mist and I nearly killed him after his 1st triumphant year at State, even though I knew if I'd of struck him down that my body would've been drug through the street Somalian style, even though we cussed at each other for a second, I still don't consider myself as being in the small group of State fans who are still denying the fact that the man had a knack for developing players.

I don't hate the guy, and I don't deny what he did to trend our program upwards. It's just that I don't agree with an outsider's opinion that he created (and owns) the patent on State having one (or a few) defensive studs on the roster who have flown under the radar (and on a near-perennial basis).

One thing is for sure (and it agrees with what a Rebel fan said earlier): Nobody in the state really liked DM that much. He was kind of an insufferable prick, and he was definitely the antithesis to what southerners consider as not being somewhat of an arsehole. "Unlikeable," if I may: That will fit in much better in Florida, and it won't matter as much in recruiting because the Florida name can patch up alot of his personality flaws.

Dan Mullen averaged 4 to 5th place in the SEC West, and while that's much better than getting Croomed every Saturday (MUCH better), it is not exactly a favorable position to be in on a perennial basis. After a few years I never felt excitement in the big games with DM at the helm because he never could pull off a win. That sucks. Give me the Kang: We will frick around and beat that number 3 ranked arse and the next week we will lose to a D2 directional school. Hell, if we're gonna be bottom to mid-tier in the SECW then we might as well have some excitement and wreck some chit on our way out. Winning big games and upsetting blue bloods and/or heavy favorites is fun AF- football or not- but it always seemed like DM never could make that happen.

I enjoyed sooo many good, positive memories and positive vibes during the DM era at State. Some, hell many, of you cannot imagine what he did for our fanbase's psyche after that 1st year: He was THE critical component for our football program (and AD as a whole) in being able to climb out of the sugar ditch and clean ourselves up into a respectable program- a program like we had forgotten we could be if only we had a little TLC. However, Dan Mullen is gone and we are still here, and are better off for what he gave us, but he will not take all the credit for State having some solid defensive players (and a few offensive ones) throughout it's often tumultuous history that nobody ever knew about.

TLDR: We were State before DM, and while he was invaluable in helping us get up off the floor, he doesn't have the patent on us drawing good players that nobody knows about- ESPECIALLY defensive ones.

Mullen didn’t do that. Preston was a product of the program and the program is larger than one person.

I think what Mullen did at Ms St was create an atmosphere of truth and a template for success while they gained better recruits.

- I think he was the first to say "Ok, this is what we are going to get and we know it. Now how can we make them better".

- It worked. There are players out there that are great and under the radar--- By accepting the majority was going to be 3-4 stars, spend the time and money in researching lesser developed talent

- Bring them in, redshirt as many as they can

- S&C off the charts growth

- Try to snag a few elites

All of that equaled a template for success.

Now Moorhead seems to be building off that but has a better appeal to players as a whole

Knox is a heckuva good coach and probably was the most likable coach on Mullen's staff here. He did a great job holding things together when Mullen left, too.
