the NCAA bans our state from hosting tournaments where the site is predetermined because of the Confederate flag.

Its not the flag that keeps NCAA post season events out of SC. Its the impending NAACP boycott.

Is SC really the only state with the flag on the statehouse grounds?

Didn't MS only recently change their state flag? I wonder if the NAACP had a similar boycott threat for NCAA post season events in that state

gonna be met with an NAACP boycott.
Is that really that big of a deal though? I thought we were past all this stuff. I don't think any black fans of a certain school wouldn't come to a game/tourney hosted in SC just because the NAACP has a problem with it.

Right but the flag is the reason the NAACP would boycott.
And what does that even mean really? Boycott. So, are members just not going to show up for the games? I just don't get why the NCAA feels like its such a big deal to please them.

It was a big enough deal for the ACC tourney to pull out of Myrtle Beach.

And it wouldn't just be black people not attending. The NAACP would mobilize and have people at the site and at the state house protesting. It'd be a shitshow and attract a ton of national media attention which is something the NCAA/conferences don't want to deal with or have that storyline take away from the event itself

I only made the distinction because the NCAA didn't bar postseason play in SC until after the NAACP made their announcement of boycotting SC. The NCAA probably doesn't give two shits about the flag.

Heres a couple articles about the ACC tourney pulling out of Myrtle Beach.

Brief Post and Courier article

Longer and more detailed article from The State

eta- I call bullshite on this
quote:

Dialogue between the ACC and the larger divisions of the NAACP began after the May announcement, Randolph said. He said the NAACP did not discuss the threat of protests or boycotts off an ACC event.

If this is how they feel
quote:

Our feeling is that as long as the Confederate flag is allowed to fly over state grounds, then no major college athletic events will be held in any city in South Carolina,” Johnson said. “The lawmakers who are responsible for this are costing the state millions of dollars in revenue from these various athletic events — football, basketball and baseball — as no major conference will award their championship games to South Carolina.

What the hell else would there be to discuss?

Yeah but I'm pretty sure the SoCon has hosted its tournaments in state a bunch in baseball. And I know our basketball team has hosted a few NITs since the 'ban' has been in place. Would the NCAA tourny rules not follow the same precedent?

eta: Nvm, I see the post about it now.

South Carolina has a tough schedule to finish the season. Most likely, either A&M or Tenn - probably Tenn - will win the conference.

Sc and Tennessee play each other in the last game. It may come down to that one game.

The NAACP boycott is ab the flag, so it is the flag that keeps predetermined postseason events out of SC.

Well if you get rid of the boycott the ban goes away, regardless of the flag.

The reason I stress the boycott over the flag is that in 2000 there was a compromise to move the flag off the top of the statehouse onto the statehouse grounds. The NAACP decided that wasn't good enough and instituted the boycott which brought the ban.

IMO it's tough titties for the NAACP. There was a legislative process that gave us what we have today. It's major rule with minority rights. The flag doesnt infringe on the rights of the minority opposed to it and a majority put it where it is today.

To say the flag is the reason the NCAA implemented the ban is ignoring the fact that the NCAA didn't give a frick until the NAACP lost and tried to take their ball home afterwards by instituting the boycott.

Was checking out the women's standings to make sure Bama wasn't at the cellar (we're not btw, we're actually in 8th place, woohoo!) And I noticed that the Lady Vols are not on top, infact, South Carolina is, sitting at 10-1. Also, their overall record is an incredible 22-2.

Damn, so Cocky fans, what's the story? Got a great coach? An amazing player(s) or something finally coming together? What's USCe's history in the sports?

USC women's basketball has had a certain degree of success, although not anywhere close to the championship levels. The best sustained run of success was in the Pam Parsons Era where the best year in that time USC went 30-6 and finished ranked 4th nationally. Those were the AIAW days.

USC has appeared in 10 NCAATs, making one Elite Eight and 4 Sweet Sixteens. Also played in 5 AIAW tournaments and 5 WNITs, winning in '78-'79...

Dawn Staley has built the program up to elite levels recently and has also put together an overall staff that's excellent at game-planning as well as player development. The past 2 seasons USC won 25 gms each yr., made the NCAAT (reaching the Sweet 16 the first time) and finished in the top 25 all with little to no depth at the post position and with short rosters.

This season USC has added two great post players through development and recruiting, and the team is overall 5th in the nation, although that may be in jeopardy with the final 5 SEC gms being the toughest part of our schedule. But the team is young mostly, and the 2014 class already holds 2 McDonald's AAs and 3 5* players overall.

Adding overall #1 prospect A'ja Wilson would a huge cherry on the top, but even if we miss out USC is well positioned to become a force in women's basketball on a national scale in the foreseeable future...

frick them. Do they not realize a lot of people in this state have ancestors that fought and died in the Civil War? Black people (not all black people, I don't mean to sound offensive) and ignorant yankees are the only people that try to make the confederate flag about racism nowadays.

To be fair neither side seems to realize that the Confederate flag that was put on the state house was put up under the influence of Strom to represent our support of segregation. It was not put up there for Southern heritage pride or anything.
