Good. I have absolutely no problem with good ole Smokey coppin' a mild buzz every now and then.

Of course, while we're actually playing you I may shamefully use words like 'mutt', 'fleabitten', 'cur', 'mange', etc. But it's wrong and I feel bad about it later.

Smokey is actually pretty awesome.

I admit it. I love 'em both. Part of the highlight of gameday is watching Uga chill on an ice cube or Smokey take out a pesky ESPN guy.

And while dogs are cool, I think Uga and Smokey are the best. I'm not as attached to the others - both Uga and Smokey are very expressive moreso than other dog mascots.

Good on ya.

I am in love with Uga, but that is kind of to be expected given my choice of University. But I like dogs in general and I think Smokey is the perfect name/breed for the Vols. Well done, imvho.

Thanks. I think both dogs are really treasures for their schools. And Uga is very much a fit for Georgia in every way.

As for Smokey... Smokey actually won the job via competition. When UT decided they needed a mascot several different breeds auditioned before the crowd.

Well, when Smokey walked out he looked up and saw the crowd in the stands and let out an enormous howl. The crowd went wild and the rest is history.

In 1955 some Kentucky fans kidnapped him...

Imagine if that shite happenned today, the FBI would be involved and people would do prison time.

He earned it then. Good for him. And the school. At this point, I can't imagine another dog breed on the sideline in orange checkerboard. Smokey simply wears it well.

Across state lines and a felony - yeah it would be bad. I doubt they'd press jail time though as long as it was a true student prank with a safe return rather than the mean stuff people do today.

I mean you gotta admit if times were different it would be pretty funny to paint Uga orange with the pet dye they use or use that same kind of harmless dye to paint an Uga logo on Smokey. The problem is people are just too crazy today and it's gone far beyond students playing jokes on students.

It's not students doing stuff anymore but crazed middle aged sidewalk fans like Updyke and in that kind of environment I wouldn't trust fans not to poison them.

Smokey would be welcome in my home, but one of my beagles would make him earn his keep and know his place. If a georgia fan ever kidnaps Smokey, hope it's me. I adore him.

Dang. If any opposing team's fans stole Smokey they had better treat that dog like a king.

Any harm come to that dog and the entire country would come down on them like they were Baghdad in Desert Storm.

Best to treat the other team's mascot like plutonium, imo.

^Yep. Same thing would happen if anyone stole Uga. Hell to pay!

I'd trust an UGA fan though with Smokey because I know y'all 'get it.'

Smokey is a great mascot. I have a Black and Tan Coonhound that's very similar. They're damn good dogs.

A few years ago, my first B&T Coonhound was in the room with me during a Tennessee/Arkansas game when she happened to see/hear Smokey on television. Smokey let out a big ol' "bawl" (their unique bark) and mine answered him right back. And she did it several times during that game. It was hilarious! I think it was love at first sight.

THAT is too funny. They're probably writing love letters to each other as we speak.

Seriously, how'd you pay attention to the game? I'd be too busy laughing. I'd love to have a bluetick but I've always heard hound dogs are a lot of work and have been reluctant because I don't know if I'd be a good enough owner. I know I'd be a loving owner but I don't know if I'd get everything right in terms of their needs and care and dogs deserve a knowledgeable owner.

BTW, thanks for giving me the word 'bawl' I didn't know their bark had a name!

I've had several hounds. Caring for them has never been trouble for me because I give them a lot of attention. A fenced in yard is best if you live in a city because they can cover some ground...and fast. Mine stays inside a lot but she's a natural hunter and likes to keep watch.

They're very lovable and they make very good companions. They like to sleep, eat, play, and go for walks. That makes 'em happy. They don't require a lot of maintenance. Anyway, it doesn't seem like it to me. Mine goes almost everywhere with me.

I highly recommend them, though they do tend to let the whole neighborhood know anytime they see a raccoon, squirrel, cat, deer....or you name it. My neighbors say she has a beautiful voice but it is loud. Keep that in mind.

BTW...I wrote the University of Tennessee about my dog having the "hots" for Smokey and they got a big kick out of it. It was funny. Someone even wrote me back and included a picture of Smokey and the story (like you posted) about how he became the UT mascot.

Smokey's a happy hound. I can tell by his smile.
