I am referring to a halfassed attempt by the city to use Legion Field as a revenue producing venue. Care to wager a guess on how much estimated revenue the SWAC championship brings to the city of Birmingham? Sorry if I offended your HBCU.
you didn't offend me at all - your origional post came off as ignorant and "halfassed". i have no affiliation nor care about the SWAC at all. all i was doing was making the statement that just because you think its what you said, doesn't make it so - and quite frankly your OP came across sorta Arrogant.
however I will agree that the city is trying to milk all the money out of the stadium it can, and why not? if its there use it till its no longer useful at all and then move on.
** also any revenue that comes in from the SWAC Championship game is revenue that would otherwise be lost if it weren't here - so whats your argument again?**

Thraken I agree. His statement was half-assed and ignorant. The city has a facility that they own. Run down or not the "Magic City Classic" putts 55,000+ in the stands and fills up every hotel in B-ham from Thursday night till Sunday morning. That entire weekend is in the black and it alone probably clears the yearly expense of Legion Field. The biggest mistake the last two years has been having that game the same weekend as the fall Talladega race costing Birmingham hotel revenue. The new ESPN contract has solved that problem. They now set the date for the Magic City Classic intead of the traditional last Saturday in Oct. Why not cater to the SWAC. Its decent attendence and its not like there is a waiting list to use the stadium.

I sometimes wish UAB would just part ways with the UA system. UAB is a fantastic school and would do fine on its own.

I do agree that it is revenue that otherwise the city wouldn't have.

The Magic City Classic and SWAC Championship are two different things. I didn't mention the Magic City Classic. The only the reason the Classic has 60k + attendance is because of the huge alumni bases of both schools in the Birmingham area and the draw the Battle of the Bands has for locals. If you really believe the Classic fills up every hotel in B'ham for even one night I don't know what to tell you.

whetehr it does or does not, is really immaterial in the overall question of the Thread - although i know you were responding to someone elses post.
no matter how many seats it may or may not fill, if it is making money for those events - why not keep doing it? seems a sound financial plan to me.

Because if Legion Field was torn down another venue would have to replace it. Birmingham has lost other opportunities that it wouldn't have lost if it had a better facility. If you had a POS vacation rental property that was used ten times a year and had the option to replace it with a smaller nicer place that would have the possibility to be used 50 times a year, would you not do it just because some dumbass is renting it a few times a year?

you are referencing 2 different situations - they have tried to pass stuff for a new stadium and its always shot down - your reasonign that to remove the stadium would force the peoples hands to make a new one - I dissagree - on the contrary i really think a large portion would not care one way or another - it make smart business sense for the city to do as it is now.

And UAB football and it's contract with the City of Birmingham Parks and Recreation board would just disappear?
The City of Birmingham is going to have to do something other than renovation to Legion Field one way or another in the next dozen or so years. The Council has the same mindset that you and many other people do....it makes a little bit more than it costs to upkeep so why do anything. The reason it doesnt cost more to upkeep is because the city only makes renovations when their hand is forced i.e. concrete falling from the upperdecks. You are probably correct nothing will be done but as a Birmingham resident, I feel we are just delaying the inevitable and being reactive rather than proactive.

Don't know, but im sure that the timing of the new stadium for UAB would be timed upon the expiration of the contract with the City - but I can't say for certain, i dunno the politics of it all. but im sure that if it wasn't setup like I said above, they would pay a buyout of it im sure.
