Tear down the entire city or the parts surrounding Legion Field?

Yeah, they tore it down one year after Alabama suspended their contract with them.

Yeah...I don't blame you. It's not a good area of Birmingham.

This is what I'm talking about. I've heard similar reactions from numerous visitors and it just makes me sad that that is the impression that Bham leaves them with. I've lived here for 15 years and it's a great city, but Legion Field

Didnt you forget that Super 8 finals or high school football also played there for state championship? ;)

Yes, right after they build a dome downtown. Replace legion with a park or something.

Ah didn't know that. Haven't gone out to the Arkadelphia/BSC area in a while. And you're right about the Magic City Classic.
Side note, haven't they moved the high school playoffs to an alternating rotation between AU and Bama? Know that Legion field used to the venue for the final games, but not sure if it still is.
For someone who had the OP you sure come off as not knowing alot of the related facts.
I have attended games at Legion Field since the I was 13. Even well after BAMA stopped playing there I have attended at least 1 UAB game a season for about the last 10 years. I even went to an olympic soccer game there. Never in all of the years I have attended have I ever had 1 problem with crime in that area. I'm not saying that it cant happen I'm saying it's not the issue people want to make it to be. The fear of white people going downtown overshadows the fact that PR wise the last thing the city of Birmingham wants is for there to be a major incident occur at an event at Legion Field. There is always a visible police presence. The city must have some form of a stadium to maintain the few events that it already has and to have any chance of pulling anything like soccer to add to the list. Legion Field is all there is. Unfortunatly Birmingham politics is as screwed up as it comes and the outlying suburbs are not interested in contributing to a facility that all of the metro area would benifit from. I cant say as I blame them with the City government being the way it is. Remember that Birmingham (Arrington) let the SEC Championship get away because they wouldnt commit to buying any unsold tickets from the SEC.
I'm not trying to defend keeping Legion Field. I hate to see it go but realistically its seen its better days. But save me the same old uneducated reasons for wanting it gone. There is a need for a facility of some sort to host the events. Personally I would like to see Gene Hallman get involved in a controling aspect.

Yeah, they should have torn it down 20 years ago.
Birmingham would be better served to go into a partnership with UAB and build a nice, smaller venue, closer to Southside...something like Louisville's stadium, maybe minus the upper deck

Goodness. How old are you ?

Actually, Legion Field was probably MORE of the secondary, if not primary stadium at one time for Alabama than War Memorial is for Arkansas.

Not sure how the stadium in LR works, but all of Bamas big games were at Legion field. They would only play a few a year in ttown. And of course the IB was there every year.
