Lawyers probably get 35-40 percent of the 2.48 mill

Sadly this is the world we live in today, it's usually cheaper to just settle a lawsuit than fight it.

Wait a second, the plaintiffs sued for $100 Million? And they only got $2.5 Million minus legal fees and taxes?

2.48 million between 8 plaintiffs

And that is before the lawyers probably get their 75% minus taxes on the other chunk. Each plaintiff will end up with about 25k to 50k each.

They got sued. Happens to big institutions and individuals all the time.

I don't know what kind of lawyer you've ever been to, but that fee is 100% unethical and a report to the board of professional responsibility would end that.

Standard contingent fee is 30% with 40% if it goes to appeals.

This just goes to show what a joke of a case they had. Glad to have it behind us. Now let's go play some football.

Nice to see that Tennessee's admin folds easily much like their football squad.

You're just miffed it didn't turn into a dumpster file scandal you could roast marshmellows over. Don't worry though, there's always Ole Miss.

South Carolina will get hammered in the future too. There's no way Boom can't frick that up and get caught doing something illegal.

Why do you say that? I don't have much faith in Boom but I don't think he's ever been caught doing anything dirty enough to get him busted. He's a good recruiter (or was at Florida, anyway) but he will have a tougher time at South Carolina.

Interesting that this was settled mere weeks before Bowles was supposed to testify in open court in the Johnson/Williams trial.

I mean, the title 9 case can only be made stronger if what he alleged against Butch Jones came out in open court, right?

Hmmmm, curious. Most curious.

It was a money grab and Baylor fans were saying that Tennessee was going to get worse than they got.

My clients and I are dismissing the lawsuit with prejudice and signed the settlement agreement," Smith said in a statement. "We are satisfied that, while universities everywhere struggle with these issues, the University of Tennessee has made significant progress in the way they educate and respond to sexual assault cases. My clients and I are also convinced that the University's leadership is truly committed to continue its exemplary efforts to create a model as it relates to sexual misconduct.

"If we all can look ahead and imagine our state's flagship university as a leader in awareness, education, support and aggressive response to these issues, this lawsuit and the resulting outcome would have contributed in a small way to the safety, well-being and hopeful futures of many young people who from time to time call the University of Tennessee home."

-David Randolph Smith (Lead attorney for the plaintiffs).

You know that UT drafted that statement, lol. Not only did they settle for approximately 2.5% of what they asked for, they have to publicly sing our praises.

Yep. From a dollars and cents standpoint, this was a solid business decision but it stinks.

If UT was guilty, the plaintiffs deserve a lot more. If they were innocent, the plaintiffs and their attorneys should be on then hook for UT's costs but our justice system doesn't work that way.

Only in rare cases does anybody other than the lawyers truly feel good about the result.

100% agree. The problem is, having this drag on for 3 more years was gonna be twice as expensive (not to mention the negative PR damage, and negative recruiting impact) as settling, even if UT was completely innocent.

It sucks, but this is the world we live in now.
