Yes, because of recent trends offensively in college football, Saban wanted to move to a 4-2-5, or more likely a 3-3-5 base defense.

Pete Golding was/is highly regarded for that scheme, and was brought in to help the long-term transition.

As with anything of this magnitude, it will and has taken time to bring in the right players to fit, and to adjust in practice, in-game, etc.

We should be getting close to that point. Or perhaps it will never work. Who knows.
A very good post.
The dilemma he's facing is that he's having to give up the big, strong Dlinemen to defense the spread offenses we've been seeing for a while. This results in an entirely different defensive mentality. It'll be interesting to see if he and his defensive coaches can find a happy medium.

Saban is waiting on Ed O to be fired so he can replace Golden.

I don't think Golding is garbage, just not the best guy available,
You guys are crazy if you don't think Saban spent a few hours pouring over that defensive plan before giving it his stamp of approval. Also, Mullen is one of the best offensive minds out there and our defense didn't adjust at all. I'm glad we played a team that busted us in the mouth, young guys will grow up quicker
