Obviously Pete Golding isn't warmed over dog shite like Bo Pelini but I don't believe he's the best defensive coordinator Alabama could get either so why has Saban stuck with him so far?

Is this some kind of project he can't give up on?

I would assume that Bama could hire pretty much any DC they wanted so obviously they aren't keeping him because he's their only option.

Its just baffling really.

Yes, because of recent trends offensively in college football, Saban wanted to move to a 4-2-5, or more likely a 3-3-5 base defense.

Pete Golding was/is highly regarded for that scheme, and was brought in to help the long-term transition.

As with anything of this magnitude, it will and has taken time to bring in the right players to fit, and to adjust in practice, in-game, etc.

We should be getting close to that point. Or perhaps it will never work. Who knows.

I guess that makes sense.

It's just odd because Saban seems to get the best guy available on the offensive side consistently yet he's stuck with Golding awhile now despite him being somewhat mediocre.

Ole Pete is taking it on the chin this week from the Bama fans. He needs to take Chris Harris uniform and just go play ILB going forward. Besides Harris isn't using the uniform anyway.

Well if he wanted 3-3-5 he had Charlie strong on staff. We know he’s a great coordinator why wasn’t he given the job. No one was beating his door down for a head coach gig. I think he’s stuck with him because he’s not going to leave after one successful season

I really thought that'd be the move.

I don't think Golding is garbage, just not the best guy available, especially when they literally had Strong on the staff.

Pete Golding, in my opinion, will grow into a good defensive coordinator but he is a below average ILB position coach. We have struggled at that position since he took over and for next season I would like to see Saban hire a proven LB coach and leave DC duties to Golding.

Agreed, it's odd because the results haven't necessarily been there (especially early on), which makes it appear that Golding doesn't know what he's doing.

But what they're both actually doing is transitioning to something else, which takes time—poor performance in the interim is to be expected.

Again though, who's to say if this will work, or if it's just the next step in a never-ending experiment. If it doesn't, I'm sure Saban will help him move along amicably and bring in someone to try something else.

This is one of the mysteries of life for me currently. I have no good explanation. At this point it almost comes across as a point of pride in admitting this experiment hasn't worked.

Not just in terms of how the play calling sucks at times, no in-game adjustments to speak of, but the most glaring deficiency with him is his coaching of the ILB's. Their performance has gone downhill fast with 5 star guys to work with.

HUNH read option demands simplicity and pure aggressiveness on the part of the defense.

That ain't Pete Golding. That ain't coach Saban.

Exactly. Pete is a great Xs and Os guy, and I'm sure he really impresses Saban with his knowledge of the game. I think it's probably also a personal thing, and they get along really well.

I think he sees Golding as his new Kirby Smart.
Unfortunately Golding coaches a SOFT arse defense, and we all hate it.

I think it's pretty telling that his name never comes up in any head coach searches.

We're all hoping like hell we can get Pruitt back.

Heaven forbid anyone try to have a regular football conversation on this board without some insecure tyke getting riled up about it.

I assume he's trying to do the same thing with Golding as he did with Kirby Smart. Have a young guy that will be around for awhile. In my dream scenario we would get Jeremy Pruitt back

Lat Saturday's performance was due to poor play by both inside LBers and safeties to some extent. What has been Bama's problem during the last three years on defense? Inside LBers. In addition to being the DC, what specific position does Golding coach? Inside LBers.

This is true. That part is a mystery to me.

I don’t know if it’s Golding, player responsibilities, or something else, but you’re correct, whatever that is with the Mike/Will needs to change, IMO.

Right now I would unfortunately lean on player execution, but credit to Mullen’s staff for their game plan. We’ll see if they continue to improve going forward, or it may very well be the coaching at that position.
