Miss State represented the west that year with a 8-4 overall record, and 5-3 conference record. Nearly every 2nd place finisher in the west since then would crush that team, and many 3rd place teams were better as well. The west was so down in 98

Cool, which year did Ole Mise make it? Would be interesting to compare and contrast the strength of the West in those years.

MSU had a 6-2 conference record that year and lead eventual NC and undefeated UT with a little over 6 minutes left in the game.

MSU finished 10-2 and 6-2 THE NEXT YEAR, and were one of those 2nd place finishers that would have crushed the 5-3 team that won the west in 98

They went 6-2 in 98. Although they did lose 41-6 to 4-7 LSU.

Ole Miss teams finished 2nd 3 times since then, and all 3 would have destroyed the 98 west champs State college team
