It was the merchant marines then the army air force. If you are going to be a zealot, go all the way. Leaving stuff out is bad for your rep.

quote:

After his two years in Detroit, Sinkwich served in both the United States Merchant Marines and the United States Army Air Forces, but a knee injury received while playing for the 2nd Air Force service team in 1945 hampered his playing career when he returned to professional football in 1946 and 1947.[1][9] He coached the semi-professional Erie (PA) Vets football team in 1949. Sinkwich was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954

So riddle me this, how does he pass the physical in 1945 that he can't pass in 1943?

Also what is with all the difference branches of service? He seems to be one hell of a teacher's pet.

I saw a reference to the merchant marines when looking, but didn't see anything specifically referencing what his involvement was. I will admit to not knowing the first fricking thing about what a merchant marine "does"... So didn't investigate any further.

Like being blatantly wrong and attempting to cherry pick data points? Like that kind of bad for your rep?

Literally none of the above changes anything. He attempted to join a branch of service, was denied, took the opportunity as a drafted NFL player, played for 2 years, and then still figured out a way to join the armed forces. Seems like he was pretty damn committed to attempting to serve the country.

Different branch of service? Different doctor conducting the exam? It's not like he didn't pass a physical due to running too slow or not being able to do enough pushups, he was medically DQ'd... How fricking dumb are you?

Also what is with all the difference branches of service? He seems to be one hell of a dedicated patriot.

FIFY...

I know when I am licked. I can’t pretend to care as much about the dawgs as you. I tried to be as factual as I could as I wouldn’t want to misrepresent those at UGa who were skeered to fight and the many who were not. God bless the latter of those men.

See you say that... and then...

You back yourself into a corner... I know facts are hard for the modern crowd, but you can just let it drop... sulk back to your corner if ignorance... or... you can read what people put in front of you and recognize that your state was not the bastion of patriotism that you thought it was when you started this post.

The only reason you continue to respond is some intense desire to have the last word... not to correct a previous wrong... but to desperately cling to some "got 'em" mentality.

If you actually knew that you'd been licked, you'd let the thread drop to the next page. If you wanna keep coming back for more, I'm happy to keep serving you up healthy doses of realism every time.

Are you seriously questioning LSUs military ties and patriotism? Wtf are you guys like 12?

Did you mean to reply to me? I never said any of that, or even thought that. I just made a joke about middle aged posters joining the military just to post about it.

Reality is a term you have zero grasp of. You bit so hard on this thread that you are about to shite out the hook. I am glad you baws got your first natty and heisman while the real men were serving the country. Everyone can see what is going on here. It's OK, you will be alright regardless.

Oh and cheers.

Literally no one is upset about this. Is that what you were going for? This is quite the badge of honor for those four teams.

"bit the hook" = proceeded to make you look like a buffoon, refuting literally every point you attempted to make, and in the meantime point out that the state of Florida was near the bottom of the pack in sending "able bodied men" to support the efforts in WWII? I'll bite that hook and shite it down your throat every time.

UGa National Champs
1942*
1980

I will give you props on the 1980 one and poop for the 1942 one.

Damn near half the team was playing for Ga Tech weren't they? Based on the way Alabama claims national titles, you'd think you could figure out a way to co-opt some of their wins that season, no?

Until about the 1952-53 school year in Georgia, school was only 11 grades. You were a freshman in the 8th grade and a senior in the 11th. I have a great-aunt who was born in 1935. She was set to graduate in 1952, but the state changed it to 12 years of school for graduation, so she said eff that, and never went back.

So, it was pretty common in Ga. for 16 and 17 year olds to be incoming freshman during WWII.

Yep, I mentioned this earlier. There also wasn't kindergarten. So you started school at 5 in 1st grade and only went 11 grades. My grandfather graduated college before his 20th birthday. He was also in the ROTC program at LSU. He was not old enough for the draft when he started at LSU during WWII, as he was only 16. He later served in the Korean War and went to law school on the GI Bill.

But seriously, trolling should have limits. It's pretty low to resort to trolling schools for not being patriotic that had thousands serve, and die, in the war.

While we're at it, let's go ahead and clear up that whole 1943 "men roster" that you are so concerned with. It's come to my attention that this is probably the best description of that team...

quote:

Of the 38 "men" on Georgia's 1943 roster, all but eight were only 16 or 17 years old and too young for the war's draft. The few remaining players of 18 years and older were only members of the team because they could not meet the military's physical standards. Many football programs around the country were in the same predicament as Georgia, prompting a good number of schools to cancel their '43 football campaigns. Only a day before the Bulldogs' season opener against Presbyterian, Coach Wally Butts asked his boys if they too wanted to cancel their season. They refused, joining only three (four) other SEC schools of the conference's 12 members which decided to field a football team.

So 8 who were refused duty... and 30 that were too young to go in the first place.

Sorry your shite arse school was too pussy to field a team.
