Nope. City College of New York.

The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) was begun in 1938 when two local New York teams, two eastern schools and two other teams from the West or Midwest were invited to play a post-season tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The following year was the inaugural year for the NCAA Tournament. The NIT field was slowly expanded and during the 1940's, it was a hot ticket with many compelling games. It was such a draw that the NCAA scheduled their tournament after the NIT in order to avoid competing directly with it. This allowed some schools the opportunity to compete in both tournaments, with City College of New York being the first and only school to win both titles in the same year in 1950. Kentucky won three NCAA titles (1948, 1949 and 1951) and one NIT title (1946) during the time period that both tournaments were considered prestigious.

Yeah, originally the NIT was the bigger tournament but you could play in both. When the mob infiltrated Madison Square Garden coach Rupp said he would not go back there and supported the NCAA and got other coaches to do the same. NIT fell and the NCAA rose because of organized crime on the east coast.

There was a point shaving scandal (that involved Kentucky, among other programs) and then the NCAA decided that conference winners were required to play in their tourney.

It was behind the scenes agreements with Rupp and the NCAA and was part of the reason Water Beyers was able to turn the NCAA into a dictatorship for about 30 years. Think all the schools in NYC area were burned at the stake and a handful of schools visiting from the midwest (barely escaped, due mainly to limited involvement).

I always thought it was just Kentucky. They got the death penalty for a year but it obviously had very little effect.
No wonder Manhattan kicked the shite out of us in 04, I bet they were still cheating.

No, it was like a dozen or more schools. Basically the ones who played in MSG but I think the old basketball schools on the east coast had been doing it for awhile but the non east schools got tied in tangentially that were there for just the tournament. I thought UK got more than a year but the ones in the east got destroyed. I think LIU has been heard from in the past few years but the rest vanished from the NCAA's after that.

Different world back then with the mob in its heyday and rosters full of older players who's college days were interrupted for a few years while they served in WWII.
