The transfer portal.

It is largely impossible to coach a player who has starting potential for more than a year before he transfers. You either put them in as a starter before they are ready or they leave. And even if you do start them, they still may transfer to a higher bidder. There are a few exceptions, but 43 of the 68 power 4 starting QBs this season were transfers. If a quarterback doesn’t transfer, it is most likely because they aren’t good enough to get a better offer elsewhere. Of the 4 final teams in the playoffs, only Drew Allar was with the team they originally signed with. Notre Dame, Texas and Ohio State all have transfers starting at QB.

Quarterback play is down across the board, not just in the SEC. Look at the top rated NFL draft QBs.

PFF has the following rated as their top 3 QBs for this years draft.

Milroe
Ward
Sanders

NFL Draft Buzz has the following 3.

Sanders
Ward
Milroe

ESPN has:

Ward
Sanders
Milroe

The same three guys just in different orders, and none blow anyone away. Yes, quarterback play is down across all of college football.

Off hand I can't ever remember a season when the SEC was supposed to be this loaded at QB and this many QBs ended up kind of sucking.

The first random list of the preseason top 20 quarterbacks in the country that I found on Google, Beck, Milroe and Ewers were all in the top 5, and Nico was 10, Brady Cook was 11 and Weigman was 15. Weird shite!
