For those discussing Aub/Tn/Bama...
Of those three, I believe we (Bana) are the most likely to lose several games that we should (on paper) win. Aub/Tn have been far more consistent in their gane performances so far. If we can avoid the otherworldly amount of turnovers that we mysteriously seemed to have throughout the non-conference schedule and avoid the lethargic lapses (especially on D) where we seem to barely be able to function for 2-3 minutes at a time, I like our upside as much as any team in the country. However, it'll take more than the game yesterday for me to believe we have that under control. To be fair, Oats' teams are notorious for improving once conference play begins, as he's quite outspoken about experimenting a lot with rotations and defensive setups early on in the season before settling into what works later (maybe more than any coach I've ever seen).
As is, I expect us to struggle on the road at South Carolina this week. Hopefully, we eventually win. However, I would be surprised if we don't struggle some. I don't think Aub/Tn would struggle in that game EVEN with it being a conference road gane.

“That dang Butler loss keeps me from thinking State has a chance to win the conference.”
No team is going to be perfect. The big key for State is to be able to gut out those wins where we don’t play well. That was a strength of Stansbury’s teams back in the early 2000’s. Jans’ teams seem to have some of that same mentality.
There are going to be a lot of battles during the conference season. Hopefully we can win more than our share of them.

I'll have to run the numbers, but I think Alabama, out of the three, has the roughest road schedule.4

The big difference is that Stansbury's teams were so talented, they could usually just out-talent other teams down the stretch. I never thought much of him as an Xs and Os guy, but he was an otherworldly assembler of talent.

He was a great recruiter and I agree that he was just an average floor coach. Jans’ is much better floor coach. And this years team has a good mix of talent. We finally have some guys who can score.

Butler hit everything they threw up and we had an off defensive night on the road. That’s going to happen a few times on the road in the SEC and a couple at home.
MSU had arguably their worst performance in that game. They shot terribly and got outrebounded by 11. Butler shot it well, too. Butler isn't a terrible loss, it isn't great......but not terrible.
That game does show how it can go with this MSU team on a bad night. If they aren't shooting well they have to rebound and keep up the effort on D. They shoot well enough from 2, and have the scorers, to overcome bad shooting nights.
