So the Longhorn network is hurting in the ratings for football. What about other sports? Is there any reason to believe the LHN makes it past this first contract?

So, you're saying it has nothing to do with A&M and everything to do with the quality opponents you are losing to? Congrats?

I would think if they were the national brand they think they are, they'd have appeared in one of the top 25 most viewed games of the year.

Even if that's true (and an argument could be made either way), the point I responded to in the first place argued that Texas was not relevant. And that couldn't be further from the truth. It's like arguing the Cowboys are irrelevant because they haven't won the superbowl since 1995, except Texas played for the championship 5 years ago.

Bad comparison b/c the Cowboys still pull some of the best ratings in the NFL even when they stink.

The horn athletic department is a clusterfrick right now. They'll re-up the LHN contract for the easy paycheck while they continue to wonder in the wilderness.

Of course. Operational costs are low, and ESPN has all of the leverage in the world. In the LHN's existence they have been laughably bad. They just need to be preseason top ten, and play a big time opponent and they'll get ratings. Don't they play LSU in a couple years? That game will be on the LHN for sure.

We do play them, but there is no chance that game lands on LHN.

Yeah. I mean. On their balance sheet it'll look like a win, but it keeps them out of the pac-16 and it completely marginalizes their current conference. I love the LHN. It's a perfect representation of their arrogance being their undoing.

I would still argue that has more to do with the SEC brand than any popularity or relevancy of the A&M program

A&M merged with the SEC. Our brands are inseparable now, no way to know when one ends and the other begins. And to be frank, that was one of the big benefits of membership to us.

True, this also happens to coincide with the worst 4 year stretch for Texas in a long time

AND Texas trading ratings for money via the LHN

AND Fox taking games and putting them on channels people don't know to look for football, like FX or FS1

AND and overall weaker Big 12 with less annual marquee (aka a big game no matter the rankings of each team) games

And that couldn't be further from the truth.

It depends on your perspective and standard for judgement.

Is the baseline a program like Louisville? If so, yes Texas is still relevant

Is the baseline Texas in 2005? If so, then modern Texas is irrelevant.

I get your point, Texas is one of the BRANDS that stands the test of time. But their current position is due to more than one decision, more than one person, more than one season.

Mack has the only national championship in modern Texas (as in the state) history. If you are saying that is the best I can hope for out of Sumlin....well sign me up!

The fact that you are a longhorn posing as a LSU fan on a SEC board PROVES that you are irrelevant

They own their tier three rights. Why wouldn't they put in there? That would be beyond stupid. Y'all have no say. It's in their stadium in front of their cameras

It gives their other sports exposure, but we rarely see ratings for non-football games.

Sure. It piggy backed on the SEC Network and got some added distribution during that push. Plus as noted above ESPN has millions of reasons to prevent the formation of a PAC16.

The only thing really threatening the LHN is the overall state of the Big 12- if they need to expand it is hard to find great candidates without a conference network.

I understand that, but a network that owns the first and second tier rights will pick up the game before it falls to the LHN.

Do they get the LHN on campus? It'll be your only way to watch your precious swamp kittens.

Maybe, maybe not.

The ESPN (Tier 1), LHN (Tier 3) and Fox (Tier 2) have been known to cut deals to get non-Tier 3 games on the LHN. This backroom dealing and lack of respect for media contracts is part of what drove us out of the Big 12.

For example the Ole Miss game got on the LHN, even though it is an obvious Tier 1 or 2 game. For that to happen ESPN had to agree to avoid the game for ESPN1/2, plus Fox was given the rights to that year's Thanksgiving game. ESPN avoiding the game is easy, but the bribe for Fox was basically they converted a Tier 2 game (meaning it is broadcasted on little Fox stations like FS1 and FX) to be a Tier 1 game (that T-day game was on big Fox).

So there very likely could be a situation where the LHN works a deal to get that game on there. If you play Texas, you risk having the away game on the LHN. Period.
