The NCAA reinstated Newton in about 24 hours.

The reinstatement was just the dance. The choreography for that dance was done in the weeks prior to that day with the AU Compliance Office working with the NCAA.

The fact that some of you think that AU picked up the phone one morning, faxed a surprise to the NCAA, and they reinstated Newton less than a day later shows just how dumb some of you actually are.

Unbelievable. For TALKING TO A TEAMMATE ???????

I have a feeling there is a little more to the situation than just talking to someone. They are talking possible 4 game, correct? That is on par with players getting money/benefits(not saying he did) as far as other recent punishments go

Did you not take note of what just happened to Georgia Tech with the NCAA?

When they tell you NOT to talk to anyone about a matter, if you value your eligibility, you DO NOT TALK to anyone.

The NCAA said they didn't have enough proof to suspend Newton AT THIS TIME.

So the NCAA didn't tell GT people not to talk, they did, and they got punished?

Or was it the NCAA told LSU people not to talk, they did, so they're going to get punished?

GaTech administrators/compliance officials helped the players to prepare answers to what they expected the NCAA would ask.

Sheppard was just talking about it to a teammate.

Is this just an inference from the rule cited as broken? Have they said what exactly he said or spoke about?

So how am I wrong again? They both talked after they were explicitly warned not to.

If you can't tell the difference between institutional corruption and two kids who are worried about their futures, then I don't think I can help you.

Another example of how backwards the NCAA infractions commitee is.

I worked for the infractions appeals committee a decade ago and it was baffling how inconsistent and illogical the penalties, and the rationale behind them, that were handed out where. We (M Slive) even issued a notice to them telling them that something had to be done on the consistency front.

I don't want to hear about ongoing investigations or anything else. Just pure stupidity.

This is true and now that you're on the outside of that corrupt organization and looking in it's nice to see you come around. Alabama suspended the players in question with the textbook situation for the 2007 Tennessee game yet still had to vacate that game. How much frickin sense does that make? You uncover a textbook distributing problem, TELL ON YOURSELF TO THE NCAA, and do the absolute best possible job reporting and correcting the situation once it was found and you get STILL get FAILURE TO MONITOR. Meanwhile tOSU has a head coach lying repeately to the NCAA and playing ineligible players and someone doesn't get FAILURE TO MONITOR for not monitoring the head coach of all people. You're right, the system is beyond fricked up and it's good to see you recognize how fricked up a system you and your old colleagues were a part of.

As for Cam, Auburn lawyered up and the lawyers very cleverly put the NCAA on the spot just a day or so before the Georgia game. Although there was heavy suspicion surrounding Cam at the time, there simply wasn't enough time to verify that Cam was definitely guilty and therefore ineligible. Auburn lawyers found and loophole and used it well. Having said that, I think Auburn risks more severe NCAA punishment IF any violations from the time are ever substantiated. It's a calculated risk if you don't know for sure that you're totally clean but one probably worth taking if you aren't on probation and desperate to finally get that national title like Auburn was.

Cammy Cam got suspended and reinstated in a matter of hours.

Auburn had nothing to loose. Bad reputation, no BCS Championships. Accreditation issues.

No one expected anything much from the integrity
dept. from Auburn.

I'm not sure with his LSU education he got your point. His loose tongue would lose to you in a debate.

Intent has no bearing at all on whether he broke any rules or not.

He did.

Intent may be important during a consideration of punishment, however.
