Well, no defense is better than trying to offer one and failing miserably, I guess.

To respond to a few of your non-responses, yeah, I actually do believe that H.S. players are sheltered. They are the star of their team and Nick Saban comes in their living room and feeds them a line that he will make them better men, when in reality, he knows that if they aren't starting pretty soon, he's moving them on. Apparently, you want them to move along, so you are in agreement with this approach.

See, you're not a hypocrite and you can feel good about that!

Apart from all the carping at each other, my point is just that it is not good for the kids or college football to oversign every year and basically hold tryouts. Eventually kids are going to catch on to this and I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA came up with something, like limiting the number of kids per class on the team (FR-Soph-JR-SR) or something like that. This won't continue, but enjoy it while you can!

And, actually, I don't think it makes you a better team because you need Senior leadership up and down the roster, even for guys who only practice. That is what Saban had going for him in 2003 and he rode that to a National Championship. Since that's the only thing that he's ever really won (except the SEC in 2001 with Dinardo's players), it is interesting to see him abandoning that approach.

It actually doesn't bode well for Bama in the future, in my opinion, but that's just fine by me.

You're either being dishonest in saying that h.s. players are that sheltered, or you're ignorant. And nice to know you are on the inside to what Saban is telling recruits. You could probably get a nice salary at any University since you know the ins and outs of it.

We shall see. I can see what you mean though. After all, we are only in the top 5 in recruiting at the moment. Hopefully not every recruit will get the word and we won't drop out of the top ten by signing day.

I'm saying that you didn't really respond to what I said, but you think that you did, so I won't argue with you.

High School players think that they are going to the NFL if Saban comes and recruits them. They are sheltered in the fact that they have no idea if they have what it takes to make it. They believe that they do because they start on their HS football team and middle-aged men cheer them on. Then, they get invited to a camp or two and Saban comes by. Yes, I do have a pretty good idea what Saban is saying, because unlike you, I have been following his recruiting pretty closely for almost a decade and have read interviews from a good number of players who reported what he said. How long have you been following Saban's recruiting.

I'm telling you that things are different now in his approach, but believe what you want. He is no longer using the approach that won him a national championship, but instead, he is running Alabama like it is a NFL team by holding tryouts each year. Eventually, it is going to blow up on ya'll, but you don't believe that, which is fine.

Yeah, I was really just wanting to see if Bama fans could defend what Saban was doing on any level other than "As long as he wins, I don't care."

There's nothing to defend. I don't know the inside workings of what is going on with each player involved. He does and he is doing what he is hired to do. Until I start hearing player after player coming out and badmouthing, its all just a bunch of wah wahing from opposing fans.

i did. remember my posts so many pages ago?

it's a business being the main theme... but that doesn't encompass my entire sentiment at all.

Yes, I understand the business argument. But, if that is the case then we really should pay players because the only thing that they have really had going for them is a college degree. You're right - only 5% of college players make it to the NFL. But, Saban apparently wants his program to put a majority of his players in the NFL. Not wrong, but it sure does stink for the guy who believed him when he was offered a scholarship and promise of a better life.

Why is Pete Carroll able to field powerhouses at USC without doing this? Jim Tressell? Bob Stoops? Urban Meyer? Yes, even Les Miles? They win and aren't running off half a recruiting class of players each year.
