So, Illinois WR catches the ball over the 1st down line but is in the air, is hit and first touches the ground 1 yard behind the line. They are given the 1st down and allows them to score. Is this the right call?
If so why is it that you can catch the ball in the air get hit and don't touch until you're out of bounds is it not a catch in bounds?

It was in the field of play with forward progress.

It's where the ball is with forward progress on the field of play....

but the catch isn't complete until his feet touch the ground, which was a yard behind the 1st down marker and if you're correct why doesn't that work on a sideline pass where you get hit out of bounds before touching the ground.

Forward progress while in the air.

I'm waiting for a DB to catch a wide receiver in the air, hold him up and walk to the sideline and drop him out of bounds. That would be bad arse.

So why doesn't that work on the sideline?

Forward progress isn’t relevant on sideline catches

Hmmm is there an imaginary line where the "sideline" rule takes affect?

You are conflating two different, unconnected rules.
Forward progress is established as the catch is made.
In order to have possession of the ball, you have to complete the process of the catch, which includes a portion of your body landing in the field of play while possessing the ball.

ok so by that a player can catch the ball be caught in the air and taken a yard and dumped out of bounds correct for a non catch.
I guess I just thought a catch wasn't complete until the foot touched.

Approved ruling 5-1-3:
III. Airborne A2 receives a legal forward pass at Team A’s 35-yard line. As A2 receives the ball, he is contacted by B1 and first comes to the ground with the ball at Team A’s 33-yard line, where the ball is declared dead. RULING: Team A’s ball at the 35-yard line. This is the point of forward progress.

Correct.

I think your confusion stems from not realizing that forward progress can be established prior to completing the process of the catch
