LSU recruited all of them Except Applewhite who would come to the games and openly cheer against LSU. Dunn and Minor were Catholic HS Baton Rouge guys, like Applewhite, but were recruited hard , archer offered Faulk but as a DB. Reggie Wayne and Reed were both highly recruited and consensus BR advocate dirty dozen type players , Berlin was recruited as was Hilliard

Wtf was wrong with him? Major Applewhite sucked as a coach so that's nice. My recollection was that Major was mainly the UT fan favorite since they saw Simms as a brat.
I always heard Ed Reed was under the radar and Tulane was his other offer

Lol I see "Major" is now in Saban's halfway home for failed coaches. What an arse

Yes ur correct Saban hired him as his first OC in 2007, thought was young OC with ties to both LA and TX. Good memory on ur part, I think he only lasted 1 year

Lol no I mean that after getting fired by Houston, he's now an "analyst" for bammer just like Butch Jones

Brilliant post. A lot of those points you brought up I didn’t know.
I clearly remember the Arnsparger years. It was the greatest success LSU had since I started there in 1980. Mike Archer was disappointing. Then Bo Rein IIRC, then Stovall (quick hire after Bo Rein’s death).

Guys you are naming a lot of players who were not even in High school when Archer was the coach.
Marshall is a recruit of the Hallman years etc.
Most recruits named are Hallman years and some even the DiNardo years.

I was referring to the 90s. Archer getting fired led to the Curly Hallaman years (failure) which leaked over to the DiNardo years. DiNardo did pull in guys like Kevin Faulk tho.

Mike Archer's approach to being HC was that he worked a 40 hour week. As a HC, he was a terrible recruiter...terrible. He was given a Mercedes in 1986 and left us with a Yugo with 200K miles on it. Mike Archer presided over the flushing of LSU Football into the toilet. Hallman at least recruited better than Archer did.

Hallman was hired to save LSU 500k a year, Joe was so happy he saved LSU 500k.
The amount of money he lost is untold.
The Archer fight has a lot to do with the good old boys network at LSU at the time and Bob, which leads to Joe and Hallman hires.
Bob was light years ahead of most AD's at the time. Much of what he wanted to do was done in the 2000's by many schools.

Hallman recruited Faulk at first iirc. As pathetic as Hallman was, he had some decent recruits, though not as good as DiNardo. Saban inherited a great roster, just not a proven QB
