Question about fumble rules

A runningback fumbles the ball which goes forward 3-4 yards forward. Defensive player trying to cover the football knocks the ball out of bounds past the first down marker.
In college football, where should the ball be spotted?
I thought it was supposed to be spotted where it went out of bounds. Or does another offensive player have to recover it to get the extra yards?

If not mistaken it was changed quite awhile ago where you couldn't fumble it forward for a 1st down. The reason is because teams were kicking/tossing the ball forward after it was fumbled to get the 1st down.

This. Comes back to the spot of the fumble.

The defense touching the ball has no bearing on the result since it does not change the status of the ball.
So, you have a forward fumble out of bounds which means the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble.
If a teammate recovered the ball in advance of the fumble, in bounds, it would be spotted where he recovered it. The only exception is the "4th down fumble" rule.
Hope that helps
