There were plenty of reasons to think Elko would be a strong hire. He worked his way up and was known as an Ivy League mind that loved football. He was a very successful DC at Notre Dame and Elko poached him. Jimbo was a rising coach until he lost Elko and our D became very suspect. Then he goes to Duke and befor you know it they are hosting Gameday and playing way above their weight class. They went from being a bottom dweller 3 win team to beating Clemson and winning 9 and then 8 with 2 bowl wins. Still he was at Duke and you can only do so much there. He was the consensus pick by most Aggies because he was a known commodity and culture fit but mainly because he is just a really, really good football coach at a fundamental level who understood how to build a culture.

He went 9-4 his first year and declined to 7-5 at Duke before being hired by A&M.

I don't think he had a single ranked win the entire time he was there other than an opening game against Clemson, who barely finished in the top25.

Last year while coaching A&M, I think he beat a single ranked team - Missouri who finished #22.

This year his only ranked win was the one against Notre Dame early in the season. Who may or may not be good.

I'm still not convinced he's a great coach. I see a product of SoS more than anything.

He was not a Saban hire but he was low risk and very attractive. You are completely devaluing that he was a DC at Notre Dame and more importantly at A&M prior to that. He knew A&M, many of the players he recruited, and he understood what he was getting in to and had allies from Day 1. He was also coaching at Duke and made them competitive which is no small feat. When Riley Leonard went down his second season they were also pretty much screwed, very limited depth at a school like that but they still managed to make a Bowl game.

Still a ways to go of course but dude can coach and most of all he fits A&M like a glove. I'd just like him to lose about 40lbs so he doesn't have a heart attack.

He's getting a chance to prove it this year, so we'll see.

Sumlin use to get decent records on questionable schedules also, losing to the few good teams he played against(other than Alabama in 2012). So until I see him win some big games, I'm a skeptic.

Sadly you’re another one who believes everyone from Louisiana lives south of I 10. If you’re gonna attack us, at the very least learn about the people who live here and how our religions and culture differ

There are too many "football schools" in this conference. There aren't enough wins to go around. There will always be several teams in this conference that would make the playoffs if only they played in any other league. The CFP committee will never properly credit SOS, that's just human nature. Snakey is fricking retarded for increasing to 9 conference games.

This. When you have complete cupcakes like Rutgers, Maryland, etc built into your conference schedule you'll never have a 3+ loss season if you're Ohio State. And it'll be interesting which Big 6 school gets marginalized in the SEC going to 9. The melts will be glorious.

Mizzou in its golden age and the op wants to get rid of their coach… in a coaching carousel Mizzou can’t compete in.
