I hate that I'm letting myself get dragged into such an insane debate, but someone please tell me what's not southern about Fayetteville.
Please....tell me.
Please....tell me.

When you start making more then a million dollars a year you do your best sucking up. I have not found a coach making millions who does not love his school. Opps! Forgot about Coach Rod.

Well, Fayetteville isn't really redneck.
So that's confused with southern. The town is more hillbilly-environmentalist than anything. A case can be made for Springdale being more "old south" although that town has really changed the past decade and now is more like a big city suburb.
Fayetteville doesn't have the typical southern racial thing going on.
Fayetteville really doesn't have that "old south" feel about it that most everything in Dixie has. Nothing in Arkansas really does until you get to Little Rock and points south and east. Fort Smith feels like an old west cowboy boom town.
I don't think you'd confuse our current mayor's accent for anything other than southern, but the guy before him talked like a yankee.
Its a mix, and its definitely a southern "border" town. Go 25 miles west and you're in Indian Territory, in a state with an oil-culture, great plains and no civil war history.

Okay, so Fayetteville doesn't have all the negative aspects of being "southern."
I guess my point of view comes from being so plugged into the campus. The UofA is a VERY southern college, and to me the UofA = Fayetteville.
I mean, its most famous restaurant is a fried chicken house and you can get real sweet tea anywhere you go. People are friendly, you never hear anything but "y'all," and SEC football is what makes the world go round. The women are beautiful, and southern accents abound.
I guess if it's not southern because there aren't a ton of billy bobs running around with a 36'' lift on their truck and a confederate flag flying off the tailgate, so be it. But that's what not what I think of when I think of "southern." I call that white trash.

There's some truth to that. Like I said earlier, it's not diverse at all. I've lived in LR and Stuttgart and those places feel alot more Southern to me than Fayetteville.
