By the end of the week half the country will discover there's a cure for Covid.

That is roughly the number of U.S. soldiers who served in WW2.

Well that wasn't hard

where the hell are you getting your numbers? quote: Globally, as of 2:46pm CEST, 9 August 2020, there have been 19,462,112 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 722,285 deaths, reported to WHO. so you are saying 722,285 is only 3% of all deaths in this time period of the pandemic?

I’m referring to the United States, you know, where college football is played. My values are from the CDC

No those numbers of deaths per Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Not positive tests. Positive tests are > 5 Million as of this morning. I saw a FDA/CDC Doctor state that the actual infection rate is probably 10 times higher the confirmed rate.

They played football in 1918 amidst the scariest pandemic in recorded history. Its fatality rate is estimated to have been as high as 20% and its main target was people 20-40 years old.

COVID-19 is nothing like that flu strain yet we’ve taken draconian measures to “contain” it, which is ridiculous when you consider how infectious it is and who its main target is. Measures to protect those most vulnerable should have been the main reaction to the virus, not shutting the world down.

Yes they did, and almost 700,000 people died. The impact of the Flu over the next generation caused life expectancy to decrease by 10 to 15 years. In 1918, US medicine new nothing about influenza of that type, US Medicine has learned how to treat the flu once you get it and we have vaccines that can mitigate infection rates.

So in hindsight, you think playing football in 1918 was a good thing. So if they cancel this year, so be it, Nobody knows what the legal liability issues are if colleges play and something happens. Professional leagues have players representation that can negotiate with Management the working conditions under COVID-19.

If the SEC plays great, but I am personally going to be uncomfortable watching it given the "potential health risk" for some player that we just don't know about. e.g., some 320-330 lb OT has unknown heart issue and gets COVID and it impacts that guy differently than a 200 lb.

As for reactions and whatever of America, sounds like a political talking about. How the hell a Virus gets political is nonsense. I can turn it around and say just give me my college football be damned the health consequences for anyone else. I want to sit home spit my tobacco, drink my beer, and watch football.

What the hell was alarmist in my post. The 1918 Flu did kill and estimated 700,000 Americans, that is factual. 2) The Life expectancy of the USA did decrease 10 to 15 years, that is factual. The Flu vaccine in the USA did not come out till the 1930's and was not available for the mass public till after WW2, but we did have penicillin starting in the 30's which helped.

I understand the average age of people dying is in mid 70's. What the medical field does not know is what is the long-term impact of someone who catches it say at 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, etc and survives. What if the average life expectancy of a 40- 60 year old who would have lived to 90 decreases 10 to 15 years, which is what happened with the 1918. Even a 20 year old who gets it, what if a 20-40 year old maybe 5 to 10 year.

How the hell did a virus killing people get so political where everyone has no concerns about the health issues of players, coaches, etc playing football.

Nothing virtue signaling about it. I would call it consistent Pro-Life moral theology.

When young people think hey I have lower risk than people in their 70's passing away from it and don't follow CDC guidelines and get sick, and yes, some do get sick and have to go to the hospital, what about the health system having to deal with all the excess COVID-19 cases rather than dealing with all the other stuff they have to deal with.

Heck, I am in my 50's and had my blood work done last month and went to see my Doctor a week later and I was told your appointment was administratively canceled. Your blood report looks fine, some elevated Triglycerides, Doctor wants you to wait 6 weeks do additional blood work to see if diet and lack of ability to get out caused it and perhaps he can see you in September. Oschner in Baton Rouge's entire Health staff is basically on COVID-19 stuff unless your in critical-life threatening situation.

So I think I am being prudent, what the hell happens in the fall when viruses tend to be much worse and you add lets say a hypothetically bad flu season on top of it, what about the health care system and the workers that work in the medical field?

But by damn give me my college football. And for the record, I saw my first LSU game as a kid in 1970 and have been going to Tiger stadium for what is now 50 years.

Football is important, but it is not life or death.

I already opted out and it looks like everyone else is as well. The article quotes Pat Forde and I am no fan of Pat Forde the way he handled this basketball shoe scandal and went after LSU, and not the big names. However, he as it turns out was the first to report what is now being reported across multiple media outlets

In the last 4 to 5 hours I have seen

1) CBS Sports reporting in is inevitable College football will be cancelled.
2) Dan Wetzel of Yahoo sports reporting as college football season heads toward inevitable collapse, which conference goes first.
3) One hour ago, 4 hours after the report listed in #1 above was filed by CBS, they reported Power 5 met to discuss viability of CFB in 2020
4)Phil Harrison of a Ohio state site reported that two prominant Power 5 ADs tell Dennis Dodd football will not be played
5) Saturday down South's Connor O'Gara is reporting the same thing
6) The Baton Rouge Advocate is now reporting it, meaning they likely got confirmation from LSU that the meetings among Power 5 took place.
7) Ross Dellenger is reporting it, he is a good reporter and has darn good sources, he worked here in Baton Rouge for the Advocate and I think still lives here, even though he spends time on the road with Sports Illustrated.

This has been trending this way for a while, I don't know why people on this board want to politicize it. Heck, the Governor of MS, a Republican, and you can't get more conservative than a MS Republican just issued a state wide mask mandate. His State Order stated to the folks in MS, if you want College football start wearing masks and slow down the infection rate. Read between the lines.

Works for me. Now the B1G has ran for cover. Lord, hope the ACC and SEC move forward with their seasons. Wish the would set Auburn and UNC back up to kick off the season.
