The meaning changed connotation over the years especially after statehood when it became more a statement of state identity in a positive fashion......
But origininaly it refers to two types of criminals. Boomers stole land from Native Americans. .Sooners claimed land illegally early in a land rush area.....
Basically both are land theives
And it's dumb that Oklahoma calls themselves OU when it is the UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA not...OKLAHOMA UNIVERISTY.

Not really, there is a story here, It started in the 1940's and was about conference branding and NOT OU's idea. When the Big 7 conference was formed they decided that all of the members would have the U at the end, hence OU, KU, CU, MU which holds true to today for all of the schools.

Yeah well calling the Boomers criminals is a matter of semantics, they were following the law at the time. But to further clarify the term "Boomer" comes from the Land Run of 1889 where 50,000 people lined up on the border to claim the land (legally), and cannon's sounded off (hence Boomer's) to start the run at high noon. My great grandmother was a little girl on one of the wagons, and it was really cool to listen to her tell her story about that time.

Same here. My great grandma used to tell stories about homesteading 160 acres around Yellowjacket Colorado. If young me would've realized how precious and fleeting those times with her truly were, I would've recorded her. She passed at age 95 in 1995 but I still remember listening to her life stories like it was yesterday.

Thanks for this. It gets old explaining why OU is designated in that fashion. Mostly because anybody who is paying attention knows that Kansas goes by KU and Colorado goes by CU and Mizzou uses MU.

As a life long Oklahoman, that’s a story worth listening to, from someone who lived it. I love Oklahoma History.
