One of the saddest things in SEC history happened on this date in 1989

In Oxford, Vanderbilt TE Brad Gaines was going for a routine catch around the Ole Miss 5 when Ole Miss CB Chucky Mullins hit him to break up the pass. Mullins hit on Gaines left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Mullins' story BEFORE the injury is tough. He grew up very poor and was a virtual orphan. But as much nonsense as we give each other's teams here, the outpouring of love by Ole Miss fans (and really anyone with a heart in the SEC) was amazing. Also amazing was the bond that Mullins and Gaines developed.

I don't know how often it is shown on TV now but if you have ESPN+, the app,etc and you've never seen it I encourage you to watch "It's Time" which chronicles Mullins' brief life and his friendship with Gaines.

There was a great piece on ESPN.com several years ago about the connection between Gaines and Mullins. I can't remember if it's on the anniversary of the injury or the anniversary of Chucky's death, but Gaines gets up early in the morning, drives something like 4 hours one way to go to the cemetery and spends time at the grave and then drives back home again.

14 years old and about 11 rows up from where it happened. I hope I never see anything like that again. RIP Chucky.

3 times a year. Anniversary of his death, anniversary of the injury, and Christmas day

God Rest Chucky's soul and God Bless Brad Gaines. He has to bare that cross for the rest of his life.

I can remember watching that play when it happened. Just awful.

I have made some very regretful decisions in my life that I may never get past. But, those were MY decisions. I don't know how you get over that guilt of being a part of something that tragic even though it really wasn't your fault.
