I went back this weekend and it was a breath of fresh air. I love going out and just riding around in the delta. Had to go out to our hunting land and do a little work but I enjoyed it.
There is nothing like it. The way the air smells and the stars, and the way the soil feels.

I got a semester off from teaching, and this September was the first time in ages I got to be in Mississippi when the first front pushes through and it starts feeling like fall. I think I sat outside for a couple of hours by myself staring at the sky that night. I think that kind of stuff just gets in your blood at some point and always connects you to a place.

Did they all go to Pillow?
They all went to Pillow, but some went away to boarding school in the 9th grade, and then some stayed at Pillow.

Then there's almost 100% chance that I know them.
I'm trying to think of who I knew that went to Boarding School but I can't think of any right now.

There's nothing more fun than getting a couple good friend and a couple girls and riding delta back roads getting drunk listening to country music.
I've done a lot in my life and have yet found anything I enjoyed more.

There are places in MS that are just as affluent as what TX has. But no one does studies or articles on those places
No, there are no places in Mississippi that compare to Preston Hollow, River Oaks, etc. Hell, Mississippi doesn't even have anything that can compare to Mountain Brook or Highland Lakes.

It's dangerous to think about how drunk I've been on those roads behind the wheel and riding around for hours

Yeah, you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

There's nothing like it though. Pretty hard to screw up unless you peel off into a field when it's wet. Even then, just leave it in 2wd and tell her you're stuck

Nah, he's been to every single place in Mississippi. He knows.

Those are probably a little bit older. Everyone runs together... I'm bad about years and keeping everyone straight unless they are in my same little age group.

I had too much pride to do that and admit my truck getting stuck.
My trick in HS was I had a 2000 z71, and if you held the gas all the way to the floor it wouldn't crank. So I would cut it off while driving, and act like it broke and wouldn't crank.
Then after hooking up, would pop the hood, act like I fixed it and crank it up and leave

It's been a while since I've been. I even miss getting stuck in the mud and having to walk back.

You can have your "high class" and fancy neighborhoods all you want.
I grew up in the country, in a 2 story antebellum plantation house.
I know what it's like growing up in a small town, with great people and great friends who would give me the shirt off their back if I needed it.
I know what it's like playing small town HS football, where everyone looks up to you.
I know what it's like to get away with anything, throw huge parties in the fields, and never have to worry about cops or rules. Just good ol boys having fun.
I know what's it like to have huge 4 wheeler rides in the country, or to spend a day on the lake fishing drinking beer with friends.
I know what it's like to make love in the bed of my truck under the stars on the MS levee with a bottle of wine.
So you can have the rich life, living in fancy neighborhoods full of regulations and uptight people. Give me a glass of sweet tea, and old back road and the front porch of an antebellum home on a farm anyday. It's how I grew up, how my kids will grow up and I wouldn't trade it for any amount of money or lifestyle in the world.

Prove me wrong. Then again, you've probably never been to Houston or Dallas, have you? You are from Memphis, after all.
