Stay at The Claremont. It's not too pricey, and it has great views of the bay and San Francisco. It is one of those grand old hotels that should be on your bucket list. It is really close to campus.

Cal is a great trip for schools. There is so much to do in the Bay Area. Allow a few days for R&R. Do SF one day. Do Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, and Napa. Go down the Pebble Beach. You can get good food anywhere. You can get great food at a lot of places.

Well, except it's not just a fringe-left faction, it's more of a culture associated with the institution.
