I never heard anything about toxic

I guess i'll chime in. I think Durkin got a bad rap at maryland. We had just transitioned to the B1G and needed to elevate our recruiting. Prior to Durkin, our recruiting classes were in the 50s and that was because Locksley was our OC. Our team was basically future NFL studs and total duds that were fringe D1 guys. When Durkin took over he basically tried to push the duds out, and that was deemed toxic.
But a caveat to that, his top 25 classes he brought in were total bust. I think we were 18 one year, good athletes, but he could not coach them up. He's only failed up since then, and hasn't been impressive. He also took over defensive play calling, and it was a shitshow.

Agreed...Durkin is not a bad OC whatsoever. I would definitely consider him a upgrade for Mizz given the previous DC.
However, Aggies had INSANE talent at DL. Probably best in college from a HS star rating perspective last year (which is somewhat a BS metric).
Durkin did NOT excel as a DC with some of the best, highly recruited defensive players when at A&M.
So his upside is VERY limited. He is not an innovative coach, that's for sure.
He can coach the crap out of linebackers....

Durkin runs a 3 man front, we can’t get any pressure, rank in the 100th on stop the run. Durkin finally switched to a 4 man front, lead the SEC in sacks and TFL, do well vs the run. It was so frustrating living though that.

It's Durkins tenure at Maryland that has some Mizzou fans apprehensive.
It was brought up when he was first hired but never heard it discussed much after that. Overall, never seemed to be an issue while he was at Ole Miss

Durkin is a top 50 DC. He took a top 3 defense at A&M and turned them into the #19 defense using the elite players that Elko recruited before he left for Duke.
Durkin tends to run a 3 man front which is not ideal in the SEC. His approach is bend but don’t break.
Overall, you could do a lot worse. But you can also do a lot better if you can afford it.
He does well with elite players, but is just average without them.

Looks like he’s Auburn bound.
