So, what is the link between Miss State and cows (cowbells)?

Back in the 50s a Cow wandered onto the field and we made an amazing comeback to beat Ole Miss. At first they started walking a cow on the field every game afterward but ended up just going with ringing a cowbell.

If we can get 10 more people to explain the exact same story that'd be cool

I've always wondered how a damn cow wandered onto the field.

I was thinking the same thing.

I enjoy reading the different versions of that really great story.

Campus was different back then. Now the South farm is way off campus but back then there were pastures literally right next to campus. The stadium and field were more open so I guess one just got free and walked out there

Makes sense. I figured it was something like that.

Essentially 40 years ago at one of the egg bowls, Ole Miss and State were locked in a defensive struggle. The entire nation was watching and it wasn't looking good for Mississippi State. Dan Mullins Sr. knew that he had to do something or we were going to lose this one. At that very moment, one of the fans' wife wandered unto the field, a dairy cow.

Dan Mullins Sr. ordered the cow to suit up and get ready to play, and it did. And that cow stayed on the sidelines ready to.come in.if needed, after that State turned the tide and came back from a 30 pt deficit to win the game. So now at every game, we, state fans, clench our cowbells tightly and shake them violently in hopes to summon yet another cow to come to.our aid.

It was the 1940's...Ole Miss never lost to State from 1948 to 1963.

I'm not trying to flame, but I genuinely do not understand how anyone can have a preference for Starkville over Oxford.

So a cow walked onto a field surrounded by a few hundred humans cheering loudly for their teams?

Cows don't usually do that. The only time they run toward a human is if you're driving thru the pasture dumping corn on the ground for an evening feeding, if you've cornered a newborn calf and the mother sees you do this, if you look at a bull in the eyes, or if the cow is mentally retarded.

Well the campus is completely different now, not like you can even see cows when on campus. You have to realize this was the 1940s at an Ag school.
