My father was KIA in Normandy. I was a little antagonistic about Marines when in Vietnam… but when my son joined the Corp and deployed to Afghanistan, then Iraq/Syria/etc.,, I put that aside and opened my eyes.
Iwo was a terrible bloody slog.. those who were there are forever young. Bless you COL. RIP.,

I just rewatched The Pacific on HBO Max. If you're never seen it or are unfamiliar with WW2 in the Pacific, it's a real eye opener.

Happy birthday America
Whatever's left of you
Who they gonna count on
When you're not there to take their call
Will the world keep right on spinnin'
Without the greatest of them all
Without the helping hand of God
Your days are numbered my old friend
We're sure gonna miss you girl
You were the best that's ever been

Exactly, the dude gave the order for the most iconic image of WWII, and he went on to serve in both Korea and Vietnam.
Yet, some douchebags think it's cool to downvote a man that lived through hell 3 x over and carried that earthly baggage until the age of 102.
God bless him. I'm certain the load was heavy. He beared it well, for all of us.

Uncommon valor was a common virtue.
27 CMHs issued to Marines and Naval servicemen
Most of any battle in American history.
Good night Chesty, wherever you are…
