Nothing wrong with claiming NC'S!

The AP claimed all the NC winners without a true NC game or bowl featuring the two best teams most years. So who says they got it right or their claims have more merit.

Thing about the bowls, some of the dominant programs didn't participate in them.
Notre Dame in its glory years went nearly 50 years without playing in a bowl. Army didn't play in bowls, either.
So, you can't say 50 years of college football didn't happen, so the AP title was the only way without everyone participating.

College football never having a true playoff system for much of existence caused this.

I like it. The controversy and trolling is great for college sports.

Do you just walk around in your daily life claiming shite you didn’t win?

They really couldn't, though. Notre Dame had a policy against bowl games for 50 years. Because of religion.
The Big 10 wouldn't send their champion to the Rose Bowl 2 years in a row. The Big 10 runner up got it sometimes. Only 1 Big 10 team was allowed to play in any bowl game per year, as well.
So how do you tell those schools that they have to play in playoff? When the conferences and administrators wouldn't even allow a single bowl game? It just wasn't even a possibility then.

AP was voting pool of 50, 100, 200, whatever sportswriter published nationally every week and that awarded a trophy to their national champion.
Even the "lesser" selectors in the NCAA records book can at least be shown to have published their work somewhere.
The new Auburn claims are based on some ranking developed by some guy in his basement, that was never published anywhere, and that no one has ever heard of until 2025.
There is a difference.

Then why are you claiming 2004?

The AP had a bias towards Pac 10, Big 12 and ACC teams plus Notre Dame. To many times the bowls weren't the No 1 and No 2 AP ranked teams facing one another. Their No 1 would win their bowl against a much lower ranking opponent and then be crowned the NC.
In 2003 they annointed USC as NC, while LSU defeated OU for the BCS National championship.
The AP is a joke.

Maybe the BCS was a joke, by not giving USC (who was No. 1 in BOTH human polls) the chance to play for the title.

The AP was obligated to award their title to the BCS winner but that changed after the 2001 Nebraska thing.

They absolutely were NOT obligated to award their tittle to the BCS winner.

It was part of the formula then. But, they disagreed with the results. See Nebraska giving up 60 in their last game and still playing for the title.

Do you think there was a playoff in 2004?
