I say that because I would prefer to see a conference champ over a team that finished fourth.
Are we pretending all conferences are equal now? Why? Because I see extreme difference between the conferences and quality of teams.
If your conference champ isn't considered one of the best 4, there is probably a reason for that.

Hell, we play sports for sake of meritocracy.
Yes and no... meritocracy is the most important part, but it's not the only part. We want good variety too, and take some anti-meritocratic measures to allow for it, while still letting the field mostly reflect merit. And at least under the current structure of the sport, you need some buy-in from the other conferences besides the SEC and Big Ten.
The reality is that 12 teams is already far too many from a purely meritocratic standpoint. We could have stopped at 8, maybe even 6. The previous 4-team playoff was pretty damn close everything considered.
But since those last 4 bids from 9-12 are all basically pity bids in the first place, I don't see the harm in guaranteeing that some of them don't go to the SEC and Big Ten. In extreme corner cases, you might have the #11 team get hot late in the season and miss a chance to win a title they could've won, but if they're #11, they probably blew two chances or maybe even three chances to get the last win to secure their spot. I just don't think that's a big deal.

Why do you prefer that? You don't want to see the best 12 teams?
A team that finished fourth in its conference does not deserve a shot at the championship.
I don't want to see an all SEC/Big 10 playoff.
A conference shouldn't be any larger than 10 teams, and each team in the conference should play every other team in the conference each season.
Teams like Purdue, Northwestern, MS State, etc, shouldn't have a shot at a championship because they were around when clubs formed a century ago and they have ridden the coattails of others to be considered "power" while others are excluded based on membership.

It looks like it will be the American conference Champion and they could have 2 losses. It won't be James Madison at 1 loss as they literally play nobody.
