Not really. I wish the masks did work because if they did, it would create the same effect as herd immunity. But you can look at the stats and see that they don't really do much.

Take a look at Florida for example. They reopen the state, and the cases remain mostly flat despite no mask orders. Then we have memorial day, the protests and the 4th and the cases start going up. The large cities in Florida all pass mask laws, but it takes over a month for the cases to start declining. These 2 things highlight there is no correlation between the number of cases and masks.

They've done studies on masks for more than 2 decades. For 25 years, the studies would show that outside healthcare workers or people who expect people to be coughing/breathing in their face, the masks did not help. Beyond that, they found that not only did they not help, but they could actually increase your risk and spread virus even more. They also increase your risk for other respiratory infections.

But here is a recent study.

On respiratory droplets and face masks

This is a study with people coughing without covering their mouths. And without a mask the particles travel a total of 2.2 feet. With a mask, the coughed particles travel only 1.1 feet.

So in a nutshell, if you constantly have people coughing in your face from less than 3 feet away, a mask may help. For the other 99.9% of the population, it's not doing a damn thing.

I can't remember anyone ever open coughing in my face from 2 feet away outside little kids.

It's all political and a means of creating a scapegoat to blame.
