I cut the chord on cable last year and have never been happier. The only cable we ever watched was football during football season.

Honestly, Comcast isn't that terrible. It's way too expensive to justify paying for it, but we never had any issues with blackouts or anything like that.

This one is on Spectrum imo, these comments from CEO yesterday seem to indicate they have no interest in keeping sports fans, which is insane to me given the map. That article says Spectrum has 15M subscribers, but you look at the map and it's Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee, Alabama, the most populated parts of Texas, Wisconsin, etc. and as a special FU to the non-cfb watching subscribers, MNF game next week is Bills-Jets

They are fricked

I agree. Comcast was always pretty good just ridiculous price wise.

As for ESPN/Spectrum... The West coast as well... I have a friend in Cali who is a huge USC fan. It's his alma mater and he's been blacked out by Spectrum not coming to the table same as everyone else. He's attending the USC-Stanford game but he had issues on the opening weekend. Spectrum is fricking over every college football fan but for USC and Tenn fans it's particularly painful to have the first time in forever you've gone into the season thinking 'huh, we might be pretty good this year' cock blocked by the cable company.

And yeah per those comments it sounds like he absolutely deserves to pay the price on this.

Not even hopeful at this point

Streaming sticks are going for as little as 20 bucks a pop. ONN 4K at Walmart solves that problem pilgrams.

From there you can have your pick of services that set the soul free and unencumbered by the perils of cable politics.

I hope this last-minute nonpaid social commentary reaches into the innermost nerve cells of our most stubborn reader and can somehow do what's right for his anxious family and, ultimately, his living sports legacy.

Sling has a decent deal right now. You got to pay upfront for the season.

I've used Sling before and I can vouch that it's good service. At the time, I only ever ran it off my laptop but I can't imagine it doesn't work the same streaming to a smart tv.

Most people can't because these companies hold you hostage by relying on them for Internet service. The only two providers in my area are Comcast and at&t. Neither of them really let you just subscribe to Internet service alone. You CAN, but they jack the price up if you don't also subscribe to TV.

It's all a scam.

That's untrue. A lot of the big cable companies you can definitely only subscribe as an Internet only.
And if you aren't in the middle of nowhere Idaho you also have AT&T, Google, Fios, Frontier etc that aren't cable companies

A good buddy from church is high up at Spectrum

He told me all they want is a double play and they don’t even have sales quotas for TV acquisitions. It’s all about fiber and wireless.

He also said this is going to be a different approach in this negotiation because spectrum wants some of Disney’s bonus content, such as Hulu, Disney Plus, ESPN +. They want one price per customer for all of it and then they can decide what to charge the customer for the services.

That’s a pretty big deal and we’ll decide a lot moving forward

I’ve had ATT internet only for like 6 years.

What he's saying though is that if you go internet only they jack up the price and they do.

That's not entirely accurate. I've had Spectrum for 2 years just because it was the most convenient for my address. I had internet and cable service with them. When I joined I had a 24-month discount on internet which was set to exprire October 1st 2023.

Last Thursday when they cut ESPN with no warning, I took my boxes and remotes at lunch on Friday and said I want to keep the internet but ditch the TV. They said it was no problem, and since I was changing service it was technically now a new contract, meaning I got another 24 monht discount on my internet service.

I don't like Spectrum and I'm not exactly singing their praises, but you absolutely most certainly can have them for JUST internet, and they aren't going to punish you for doing that.

Ya'll realize you can split a YouTube TV subscription between like 3 different households right?

No idea why anyone who has the ability to browse an internet message board would still be paying for actual cable.

Ya get whatcha get .... and you don't throw a fit.

I'm old and resistant to change. I've grown up with cable and have just always been comfortable with having it. But once spectrum forced my hand to ditching them and switching to youtubetv, now I'm kicking myself for waiting as long as I did.

Eh I have fiber and can’t say I’ve had that experience. Cable package, on the other hand, was ridiculously expensive and not worth it. I pay far less for internet, YouTube tv, and multiple streaming services than I did prior for an internet/cable package

I think that's what these companies are banking on. Folks who are set in their ways and refusing to change. It's an easy process to cut the cord.

What people aren't getting is Charter(owns Spectrum) WANTS you to drop their TV service and ONLY use them for broadband.

I have at&t fiber. I quit U-Verse when it kept going up. I would rather pay a higher rate for internet than a higher rate for a cable that doesn't provide my sports

I know some folks are rooting for spectrum in this fight but be careful what you wish for. Charging large carriage fees for people that don’t watch sports allows SEC programs to have the best facilities, athlete training, and coaching staff. Schools won’t do more with less, they are drunk on the millions in tv money. They will charge more at the stadium.

So, what does a fast internet service, YouTube tv and a couple of movie streaming services gonna cost, per month? Just for comparisons?

The legacy cable business is a dyeing business. Spectrum may just say the hell with it and offer a deal through YouTube and gain more internet business. That were their future lies. Disney may have screwed themselves.

Currently Disney charges everyone who has cable for ESPN whether they watched sports or not. If they go the internet route people will cancel right after their sports season is over. So they’ll charge even more to make up the lost revenue, so only die hard will pay .
