Had a good defense at Navy this year.
Here's a primer: LINK
Newberry played an instrumental role in Navy’s dramatic turnaround from a 3-10 record in 2018 to an 11-2 mark in 2019. He installed an aggressive and unpredictable system that enabled the Midshipmen to go from the bottom of the Football Bowl Subdivision rankings in almost every statistical category to the top third.
Navy finished the season ranked 16th nationally in total defense with 314.2 yards allowed per game. The Midshipmen 34th in scoring defense (22.3 points per game), 10th in rushing defense (105.8 yards), 38th in passing defense (208.3 yards) and 31st in red zone defense.

I honestly don't know why more coaches from the service academies aren't hired by D-1 schools. The environment they could bring to the practice field and locker rooms would be a large benefit at many schools.

Navy was 8th in time of possession. Washington St. was 80th. He will have his defense on the field a whole lot more next year than he did last year. Seems lien a solid hire though.

State still hasn't officially hired him yet.

He did really well at Navy. I'll be interested to see how he does with an air raid offense opposite of him instead of the ball control option offense. Leach may use RB more in the SEC though.

While people talk, in depth, about how the triple option makes the Military Academies successful on the field in recent years its been the defense that has driven their success.
Army was a solid top 25 team two seasons ago with a defense that absolutely routed Houston in their bowl game. Then their DC took the job at UNC and Army fell off the face of the Earth this year.
Navy had a tremendous year, and again it was keyed by their defense vastly improving.
What both teams did with their defense is install a very aggressive scheme that brings pressure on almost every down. If you are, let us be honest, Army or Navy you have to take some chances instead of sitting back.
I think it could work out well at Mississippi State if Newberry goes there. Time and time again over the last decade we've seen that letting these high powered SEC offenses sit back in the pocket is a great way to get picked apart.
If Kendall Briles manages to resurrect the Arkansas offense from the dead than every SEC West team that State plays next season is probably going to have a very potent offense. You want to make darn sure they don't get on track.
Personally hope he doesn't go there. A big part of the Briles offense is the veer option out of the shotgun and a former Navy DC knows how to shut that down.

Yes. I'll be honest. Its hard for me to be excited about the future of defense at State. Newberry seems solid, and he will have a lot more talent at MSU than he has ever had, but the defense is on the field a lot in the Leach system.
Grantham's bend but don't break style would be really nice to have.

Do you still have the players to run that system though? I hate to say it but Moorhead squandered the years where y'all had one of the greatest defenses in the country.
If you have the players, than playing a more cautious style is the way to go, if you don't than you are going to have to dial up the pressure.

Because most of the environment at the Service Academies is brought by the players. There is rarely discipline or grade issues and you do not have to worry about them after practice. Most of the P5 schools want to hire coaches they think can relate to this generation and their culture.

A good point. That would explain Bobby Petrino continued to get hired.

He is not the only coach with can relate personally to todays culture. But most aren't in their late 50s.

He only has one year of DC experience at the FBS level and it’s at a school where his defense got a ton of rest. Seems like a risky hire.

It is a risky hire. Plus he is an unknown recruiter.

Anyone who can make a top 25 defense out of the players they get at the service academies is doing a helluva job.

34th in PPG against a really weak schedule but that’s not bad. Just think they could’ve kept Shoop or maybe gone a more experienced coordinator.

Notre Dame, Houston, SMU and Memphis have had good offenses lately. Remember its a team of servicemen so its hard to talk about a schedule when the team is made up of guys going in the military, not 4/5 star recruits with pro aspirations

Great hire! Very excited about this.

That guy is a master tactician. Not sure about his recruiting, but the name has great schemes for pressure.

And that’s why he’s no longer our coach.
