Two years of outstanding play put Garrett at No. 2 in the PFF College 101 heading into the season and he hasn’t disappointed through four games. He boasts the nation’s top pass-rushing grade at 89.8, this after posting a 92.8 mark in 2014 and 89.7 in 2015. Even with the added attention from opposing offenses, he’s pressured the quarterback at a higher rate than his career average (pressured quarterback on 18.3 percent of rushes compared to 17.3 percent for his career).

quote:

Last season, quarterbacks in college football saw their passer rating (NFL version) drop from 95.0 in a clean pocket to 59.4 while under pressure. That’s the equivalent to taking an All-American candidate and relegating him to third-string. Garrett creates pressure as well as any every-down edge rusher in the country, particularly when factoring the speed in which he gets to the quarterback. This season, opposing quarterbacks have only completed 36.4 percent of their passes on plays in which Garrett has created pressure – that’s impacting the game without putting a sack on the stat sheet.

quote:

As good as Texas A&M’s defense has been at creating pressure from all angles, Garrett is still the nation’s most dominant force when given one-on-one matchups. Take his Week 1 battle against UCLA LT Conor McDermott, a potential NFL prospect in his own right. Garrett won a ridiculous 12 of their 24 head-to-head battles officially finishing with a sack, three QB hits, and six hurries on those plays including two other wins that didn’t go down as pressure because the ball was out so quickly from QB Josh Rosen. It’s that ability to take over a game that makes Garrett special and a Heisman contender on his pass rushing alone.

quote:

At PFF, we factor in all aspects of the game, and while we acknowledge that Garrett’s pass rushing is by far the most important part of his Heisman campaign, playing at least adequate run defense is a prerequisite for starting the hype train. To this point, the run-game improvement has been noticeable and Garrett has turned into a playmaker in that part of his game as well.

No stats are available, but I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that the average number of blockers he faces per play is nowhere near what Garrett faces.

sounds like a coaching issue or maybe the level of talent of those around him.

Key blows by 2 and 3 blockers constantly. Auburn even tried to constantly put the RB on his side to help out and he was just shedding fools.

We are 4-0 and LSU is 2-2 and just fired their coach so that doesn't seem correct

So, if the coach decides to put Garrett in the middle of the line for a few plays, and it absorbs blockers that now leave the edges exposed and get even more pressure on the QB (plus, jams the middle against a run), you think this is either a coaching failure or an indication of Garrett's ineffectiveness?

All I'm saying is that sacks and INT's are two of the most misleading stats in football. Once a player has proven to be dominant, he is either double-teamed constantly (in the case of a pass rusher) or his side is no longer thrown to (in the case of a DB).

never said he wasn't.

the comments are off his sack numbers.

if chief plays him inside and he gets less sacks does that not mean its inclusive to coaching.

quit being so defensive aggies.

We don't need to be pushing his rep. He is respected and doesn't need this.

Maybe a few snaps, but he's been on the outside the significant majority. We bring pressure behind him constantly to take advantage of the extra attention he needs blocking wise
