If a 9-3 Arkansas team upsets a 12-0 Tennessee team in the SECCG, would Arkansas get a bye? I think the seedings are separate from the who is in discussion. Tennessee might still get a top 4 seed, and Arkansas land somewhere around 7-9.

Lots of moving pieces here. First the SECCG is now 2 teams with the best record. So it would be interesting to see an undefeated vs a 3 loss team.

Second, the top 4 seeds are the highest ranked conference champions, meaning neither Arkansas nor Tennessee would be a top seed.

Tenner could only go as high as 5th. The rule states that the top 4 conference champions get a bye, so unless liberty is ranked higher than Arkansas after the SECCG the 4th would go to Arkansas. Which would incidentally kill the SECCG.

ETA: Given that the championship will be between the top two conference teams and not in a division format a 9-3 team going to the SECCG is not very likely unless they crap out in non-con play.

Is the 5th ranked conference champ automatically the 5th seed?

I don’t think so.

We already know who the best team is at the end of the regular season, why have a playoff at all if it results in the best team not winning it?

With no divisions, it's unlikely you will see a 9-3 vs. 12-0 matchup in the SECCG, but yeah - in a 5+7 format, the top four conference champions get a bye, the 5th conference champion is going to be a MWC/American/Sun Belt team. In your scenario, a 10-3 Arkansas is likely to be ranked higher than a 13-0 Liberty or South Alabama. But not as high as a 11-1 Ohio State or Alabama.

It's going to be strange some years.

Correct.

Top four conference champs are ranked 1-4.

Next conference champ + top 7 remaining teams are seeded 5-12.

Would be pretty demoralizing for Billy Napier if ULL made it to the playoffs before does.

A slight difference under this format to what we saw floated at the end of last year.

Byes
1. Michigan
2. Texas
3. Alabama
4. Florida State

First Round

23. Liberty at 2. Washington
11. Ole Miss at 6. Georgia*
10. Penn State at 7. Ohio State*
9. Missouri at 8. Oregon

*- Ole Miss and Penn State are likely switched to avoid rematches.

Am I missing something? Washington won its conference and was ranked 2nd in the CFP. How do they not get a bye?

It wouldn't matter if they weren't as ranked as high as Alabama, they would still get the bye over them by virture of being champion (it comes off as you're implying they wouldn't)

Oh and here's the best part.

If Notre Dame is 12-0 and the #1 team in every metric, they get the 5 seed.

Pac 12 is gone. The new format assumes that, so I was moving things around. I know the Pac 12 existed last year.

The conference Washington won doesn't exist (which is why it's 5-7 vs 6-6).

It makes it a difficult comparison. Washington and Michigan will both be Big 10 teams going forward. Only one will be a conference champ. The other will not get a bye.

Got it. In that scenario though, Bama and Texas wouldn't both have byes in the new conference format either.
