Why is that a dead ball foul if it happens during a play?

Because that's what the rules say. Just like taking your helmet off during a play is a dead ball foul.

Yea. I realize that...just seems illogical. If a foul happens during a play it shouldn't be dead ball. The helmet rule is another good example.

Because it didn't involve any player on the field. The penalty is assessed as a deadball foul on the next play. In this case, kickoff from the 20.

Probably because it's something that really had no impact on the play. Why penalize someone 50 yards because some staffer got excited and ran a few feet onto the field?

You could argue that anything that happens that affects the game...affects the game. Say he tripped the ref...and then the ref missed a call like the player stepping out of bounds. If that play gets called out at the 16 it wouldn't have been over turned. Again it just seems crazy that if a foul, any foul occurs during the play it shouldn't be a dead ball foul.

I don't make the rules, I'm just trying to interpret them.

I am not suggesting it was called wrong. Just that it's a stupid application of a rule. Illogical.

I think the reason is because it had nothing to do with the play. Similar to getting a ticket for your vehicle registration being out of date. It had nothing to do with how you were driving. Therefore, it's a non-moving violation

It was absolutely a great game but the worst calls were not tossing #48 and the no-call on the push away of Fromm’s head after the tackle...neither were questionable. The BS pass interference on GA late and the numerous missed holding calls on Bama’s OL are a couple of others that come to mind but are common no calls. Again a great game.
I got the impression in the second half that the referees became scared shitless of the Bama players. There should have been no less than 2 Bama players ejected for egregious unsportsmanlike like penalties that occurred in the direct site of an official and he turned his head. They were going to let the players do whatever they wanted. I don’t know if the crowd got to them or they had players threatening them on the field but they became pussified to call anything in the second half
