1. Florida St. - 19 appearances
2. Clemson - 11 appearances
3. Northern Colorado - 10 appearances
4t. Mississippi State - 8 appearances
4t. North Carolina - 8 appearances (however, that's counting this year, in which they could win the title)
4t. South Carolina - 8 appearances
7. Maine - 7 appearances
8t. Arkansas - 6 appearances (however, that's counting this year, in which they could win the title)
8t. St. John's (NY) - 6 appearances
8t. Western Michigan - 6 appearances
SEC needs to step it up.
(No rhyme or reason for me posting this...just thought I'd share the info.)
ETA: To be fair, only 3 of South Carolina's appearances came as a member of the SEC. And only 2 of Arkansas's appearances came as a member of the SEC.

If Arky wins it's first game in the CWS watch out. The Hogs are red hot.
LSU needs to step it up a notch at the plate in order to win.
Hopefully the Hogs and Tigers play two games at the CWS.

CWS appearances in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1974.
Looks like they had a pretty good program for over 20 straight years, but mostly in the 50's.

How about the ACC needs to step it up...FSU, Clemson and UNC...

Our 8 appearances and championships kind of hounds me.

it was a different sport from the 50's through the 70's. most schools didn't give a shite about baseball, and the NCAA tourney was heavily regionalized. So it was pretty much a given that a northeast team would make the CWS every year.

Maine used to host a regional almost every year. Seems like there used to be only 8 reagionals; some with 4 teams and some with 6.

Is that why USC has the most titles? I understand that they are a legit program, but 12 Nat'l Champs is unreal. I am also aware that the majority of their titles are from years and years ago.

The tourney format changed a lot over the years. At one point for a few years, the NCAA didn't even conduct the tourney before the CWS....they let the colleges in that district conduct their own tournaments to determine who played in the CWS....those games are not included in the NCAA history books.
College baseball was quite the neglected sport until the 80's.

I would say the USC titles are legit as well as Arizona State. They put more into it than most. Texas has always put emphasis on their program and then probably followed by Miami. Mississippi State came around in 1974 when Ron Polk came to Starkville. As someone mentioned, it caught on in the 80s. I have followed MSU baseball closely and the college world series since late 70s/early 80s.

Mike Martin used to be the Susan Lucci of college baseball...until she finally DID win one!

It was maybe neglected in the SEC to an extent, but it was still competitive nationally in the 60's and 70's. Guys like Reggie Jackson and Dave Winfield played in it years ago. You really can't marginalize USC's accomplishment.
