Monken at a P5 school

Don't want to take too long setting it up, but I was reading another Gamecock board asking who exactly anyone would want to replace Muschamp.
Usual names pop up, Matt Campbell, Leach, Babers, etc.
But a few people mentioned the Army coach.
Personally I love the idea. I will relish every chop block and drink the tears of everyone in the East gladly.
Not sure Tech did the right thing going away from the option myself. I liked watching it.
But there are some arguments against it. Though I think part of Johnson's failure at Tech was that he wasn't a very good recruiter, period, in addition to trying to sell a non-NFL pipeline offense.
But I am fricking sick and tired of trying to play the Jimmy and Joe game with the teams in this conference.
Florida and Georgia need no introduction in this regard. Personally I think the population growth in Middle Tennessee has Tennessee poised to be something similar, though that situation is still not as good as Georgia. Just thinking it through, I am less concerned about playing the "what if" game concerning Clemson than those three schools. Then we have A&M, another scary school from a talent standpoint.
No matter what we do, what we try, we never finish higher than 7th in recruiting rankings when all is said and done. Most often we are anywhere from 7th to 12th or so. We do quite well on a national basis in that respect, but 20th nationally or so, and 7th in the SEC is still ... 7th in the SEC.
We need to do something, some kind of system to enable us to compete with teams that frankly just have better players.
Really the spread should be a step in that direction, but Muschamp recruits qb's that can't run. Or he doesn't play them, or doesn't let them run. Whatever.
But the option and the Air Raid (talking Leach style) are both systems that let you compete against teams with better athletes. Both are ways of life, and it is hard to go back though.
So what are people's thoughts on the issue? I know a lot of people are dead set against the option, but it is so beautiful to watch. Sometimes.

Monken is great, but I feel like going to the option is basically throwing your hands up and admitting you can never be a year in and year out Top 10/15 team. That makes sense at places with severe restrictions (for whatever reason) on the types of players they can sign - Vanderbilt, Kansas, service academies, etc.
South Carolina ain't one of those places. South Carolina needs to target coaches who have success with a system that can find fast, under the radar kids on offense and defense that fit a system.
Campbell and Babers have proven to be perfect examples of those types of guys. Bronco Mendenhall is one of those guys. Mullen was one of those guys at State. Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Dantonio (Carolina guy too). You have to find a guy who is experienced with playing with the deck stacked against him and is comfortable with it. And, South Carolina will be a job that opens up athletes and the type of winning those guys could NEVER have dreamed of at previous jobs...........even if it means there are other teams in the league that will probably be ahead of you most years.

Completely agree that the option is fun to watch and that Monken is a great coach. I’m sure programs are making passes at him trying to lure him over and maybe even some lower tier P5 ones but I would rather we not hire him.
I’d much rather go for a Leach system than an option and be relegated to a GT-like position in the SEC. A team that isn’t built to play from behind or retake a lead and that is miserably middling each year with a chance to maybe sneak up on a team once in a while. That just isn’t want I want.
I’d prefer we take a late in life pass at Dantonio who has proven that he can compete in a division where he gets decidedly out-recruited.

I hear Urban Meyer and Gene Chizik are available.
Isnt Scar where national championships go out to pasture?

Another example of the type of guy I was talking about.

Funny. I figured that a Clemson fan equates pasture and vagina.
I guess Scar fans get the call of the wild, too. Look at the bright side... humping sheep doesn't get your sister pregnant.

I’d hire Campbell in a heartbeat

Yea he'd be a fantastic fit - similar situation to Iowa State in their league but with so many more accessible areas to sign athletes.

That’s a whole lot of typing for such a weak burn.

I think he'd be great, but at his age, and he also has had heart trouble, I can't imagine he would leave Michigan State till it is time to hang it up.
Heard Leach had decided to take the Tennessee job last year before... whatever happened, happened. To my mind I would stay at Washington State for the remainder of my career if I was him, but I ain't him.
Anyway, not that I think the South Carolina job has cooties, but it just seems like some of the names that could do a good job here, probably shouldn't.

Wrong Monken. That's Todd. He is talking about his cousin Jeff (the coach at Army).

Yea I know exactly what you are saying - I think your options are try and identify somebody who might be a year away from being the "hot coach", but that can backfire because the guy may not be up for it and be a total disaster. Or, you can be more unconventional and hire a guy who knows how to get around the structural issues/limitations and still make it work.
I think that there are plenty of guys who fit #2 who would look at South Carolina as a place where they could do their system and do it with much better athletes.

Wrong Monken. Todd is the correct answer. He was the OC for the Bucs and wouldn't be retained at Tampa, I wouldn't think.

Had to look up a synopsis. Liked what I read.
But come on, you'd have to go back to Mike Archer or Dinardo to find an LSU team that was less talented than a Notre Dame team.
Ah, NM, just read the post above about Monken's cousin.

Yea you’re probably right. I’ll grant that Dantonio is a dream and very unlikely but I can’t help returning back to him because of his successes and connections to SC.
