Whether you like it or not the University of Mississippi is a public university. Col Reb was universally perceived as a slave owner and inherently seen as a symbol for racism. How can you have a symbol of a public university that is perceived to hate a large portions of students? IMO it's ironic and should not happen.
Whether you think the Black Bear is stupid, funny, or don't give a shite, it is the first University symbol that was created where African-Americans were involved in it's creation. Going back on that would be a huge disgrace to the progress this State has made.

First signature...Robert E. Lee himself.

It's going to be incredibly hard to get 100,000 signatures of registered voters. Especially considering that they have to be evenly spread among the districts. The reality is, even in states like California that have 30,000,000 people it's often hard to get that many signatures.
You're right. UNLESS, they use paid professional signature gatherers. Every initiative in California that has made it to the ballot since the 1980's has done so because of this. They are going to have to pour some serious cash to get this on the ballot IMO. If they go this route, then Mississippians will be voting on this in 2012.

If there had been a fair vote with Colonel Reb as one of the choices, the current mascot would not be a black bear.
Like it or not.
The majority of students, fans, boosters and alumni would have voted to keep Colonel Reb.
So? Look at who we elect to The White House and Congress. Popular decisions aren't always the best decisions. Also, what makes you think this should have been up to a popular vote? Aren't university administrators in place to make decisions for the school on it's behalf?

Except it does not work, please, get rid of Dixie and Col Reb and we will get a bunch of five stars and win the SEC. How is that going?
You gave away your heritage for nothing
First, it wasnt primarily about football. Read the thread and learn something.
Secondly, that isn't MY heritage. And even if it were, why should Ole Miss feel obligated to honor it or anybody else's heritage?

Why is this train wreck still going?

My question: has abolishing colonel reb really done much for the university? It seems like the kids they bring in, for the most part, come from the same demographic. Maybe their improvements academically are attributed to ole miss' investment financially, not a badass mascot? You guys know better than me.

Oh no, what will I do?
I know, live like it's 2011 and not 1861

Thats neither here nor there. The bear is the mascot for better or worse. It does no good to keep stirring up this shite.
Donations are up from what I've heard though.
This issue, like Darn Merlins, needs to be put down like a feral flagshipper.

Hopefully he died in a meth making accident. Seems fitting.

I don't think they started calling it "Ole Miss" because that's what they called the slave owner's wife, but because it was short for "ole mississippi."
Why would they call a university what they called a slave owner's wife?

It's not just Colonel Reb. It's the flag. It's Dixie. It's the general celebration of the fantastical Old South.
It has helped tremendously. In the past ten to fifteen years there have been a ton of great changes at Ole Miss which I don't think are mere coincidences.
And regarding the demographics, I think that is really a perception thing. Ole Miss is the second blackest SEC school and also has a sizable hippie, hipster, oddball type contingent to counterbalance the suburban fratstars.

And most people's perception is that they don't know what Ole Miss means and they don't care.

If this actually goes through(which I doubt it will), I will start a petition to change MSU to Poopy-head State University.
oh....and the event that has happened(not what might happen) is hereby declared by me as the WAOM moment following the good news I'm hearing about Bolden.
