I really don't care what mascot Ole Miss chooses to use, but I do object to amending the state constitution to mandate something as trivial as what mascot a state university should use and and how it should be used. That is simply ridiculous. Those who think that is what a state constitution is about should get a life.

The difference is LSU doesnt have an instate rival using your nickname against you in recruiting. No, we have no idea how someone would be offended, but every coach since Brewer has complained of negative recruiting used because of col. reb. The players we recruit ask the coaches about that type of things and we lose a few each year because of it

Concurred. However, I'm going to support this simply because I think the people who started this are really a bunch of bullies.

By the way, that's a blatant lie. Mississippi State integrated after Ole Miss and Alabama. That teaches us another lesson in that, for a lot of people, perception is reality. So much of this is about fighting PERCEPTIONS of racism and not actual racism. shite, you yourself perceive a lot of things (outside political forces comment you made earlier, for example) which aren't exactly the case. I think we all do to an extent.
Well technically it wasn't, because long after desegregation Vaught still wouldn't allow black people on his team at Ole Miss. So yes, even after your school was opened to blacks your coach still wouldn't allow them to wear the uniform. And a lot of this Col Reb shite is a direct appreal to the old school OM fans who are still very solidly racist. Sucks but it is the truth. To this very day, OM STILL has a large contingent of their fan base who hate blacks. It's who you are, it's your tradition. And Col Reb is the figure head for that.

This is just fricking terrible. I'm beginning to dislike Col. Sanders. frick it , lets just go all tRAdIshun crazy and bring back Jim Ivy as the mascot.

And State doesn't. Wake the frick up you're in Mississippi. Racism is in both fanbases. If you don't think State has just as many racists fans as OM you're either in a terrible state of denial or a full on retard.

Which is exactly the stereotype we are trying to get rid of.

This is by-far the most asinine statement I've heard in a while. Seriously?
Are you an infant?

You don't get it.
It doesn't matter what OUR ACTUAL HISTORY is, because unless you plan on lecturing every single person with an opinion, you're not going to change anybody's mind. Like I said, it's about fighting perceptions of racism instead of fighting actual racism.

Good point.
What I find amazing is that a lot of people are bitching about Jones and Khayat for mandating the change, then turning around and suggesting that we - get this - mandate a change.

Nope, technically it was.
Jackie said "when the national guard" was at Ole Miss and Alabama (1962 and 1963, respectively), that Mississippi State was admitting blacks, something which didn't happen until 1965.

I realize that. Our first black player was Ben Williams, who suited up in 1973. When was State's first black player? I really don't know to be honest.

EVERY SCHOOL IN THE SEC aside from maybe Vanderbilt STILL has a large contingent of their fan base who hate blacks.
FIFY. To act as if there aren't bigots wearing purple and yellow or shouting "ROW TIE ROW" every saturday is naive.

Whether you like it or not the University of Mississippi is a public university. Col Reb was universally perceived as a slave owner and inherently seen as a symbol for racism. How can you have a symbol of a public university that is perceived to hate a large portions of students? IMO it's ironic and should not happen.
Whether you think the Black Bear is stupid, funny, or don't give a shite, it is the first University symbol that was created where African-Americans were involved in it's creation. Going back on that would be a huge disgrace to the progress this State has made.

Except it does not work, please, get rid of Dixie and Col Reb and we will get a bunch of five stars and win the SEC. How is that going?
You gave away your heritage for nothing

If there had been a fair vote with Colonel Reb as one of the choices, the current mascot would not be a black bear.
Like it or not.
The majority of students, fans, boosters and alumni would have voted to keep Colonel Reb.

It's going to be incredibly hard to get 100,000 signatures of registered voters. Especially considering that they have to be evenly spread among the districts. The reality is, even in states like California that have 30,000,000 people it's often hard to get that many signatures.
