Why can't most LSU fans admit this? He wasn't that bad, especially after what LSU had recently been through...
IMO, it was more than just him keeping bad coaches on staff, which by the way is a pretty significant screw up.
Remember when LSU couldn't make an extra point to save its life, and bottles were thrown on to the field?

Yep,Louisiana high school players are so amazing they need zero coaching in college,no game plan, etc.
Our high school players are so unbelievable that they could just wait for their scholarship, never practice, never train, never attend meetings, show up on Saturdays and win 60+ games in 6 years, 2 SEC West titles, an SEC championship, and a National Championship.
But somehow all this talent disappeared in 2000 and then suddenly reappeared in 2005.....because we all know that Saban just coached up a bunch of scrubs.
I don't know why LSU even has a coaching staff because we obviously don't need them. We could save alot of money.

Really? Despite the fact that LSU won the freaking NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

According to that delightful Terry Saban's interview in the Birmingham News in 2008, "Nick had to build that program from scratch."
Saban took a NAIA DII team to the SEC title in two years. Amazing.

I wouldn't go there. The coach you worship lost to UAB and ULM.

that doesn't count...LSU and Bama were basically McNeese at that time...remember?

But they didn't win a national championship when they lost to ULM, so they didn't underachieve at all.

It is inexcusable to me for schools like LSU and Bama to lose to programs like that.

Yeah don't understand though how the talent in Louisiana is so good they don't need coaching, but saban came in and coached up a bunch of scrubs to greatness? Seems like an oxymoron.

LSU had a better team in both 2007 and 2010 and honestly they underachieved with both.
2010? underachieved in light of how bad the QB play was?
I don't see that argument. 11 wins was borderline remarkable with the near absence of QB play last year

I think Miles is an unorganized goofball who has a different way of getting players motivated. He's the anti-Saban. It seems like everything is done on a whim and decisions made on a hunch
Miles is 6 years into coaching in the best division and best conference in college football. Luck or chance will only carry you so far
it isn't even worth arguing about really - when you've coached for almost 80 games and you have a record of 62-17 (.785) in the SEC West - it is no longer debatable
Obviously Nick Saban is a tremendous coach - I won't harp on that because I don't think anyone is disputing that

yes, la. produces a lot, but per capita not so many. lsu has to go out-of-state every year in order to sign a full complement of sec caliber players
Hate to interrupt, but Louisiana produces, Per capita, more NFL players than any state in this country.

I think Grandad understands that, but worded it wrong. He meant, per capita La produces alot of talent, but there arent alot of people in La. Meaning the depth of talent in Ga, Al, Fl is greater (thats Al recruiting grounds) because the population is greater.

Not sure why Les Miles catches so much flak from his own fans. Is he the greatest in-game strategist ever? No. Does he seem to fly by the seat of his pants at times? Yes. But, when he has time to prepare his kids, Les is tough to beat. And another quality of Miles' that would make me want to hire him: his kids play their asses off for him every game. I can't say I've seen every LSU game the last few years. But, I can say I haven't seen LSU give a good effort on the field for Miles.

In defense of his statement - just because there is a lot of talent in Louisiana (esp per capita)... that does not mean LSU has been able to get all of the different position needs filled by only recruiting Louisiana kids
You can come close (the 2003 team is evidence of that) but you will probably have to look out of state to fill some needs (this coming year is the first year in forever when Louisiana has had a lot of good LB recruits)

Keep in mind that Miles inherited a stacked team while Saban took over a sorry, talent-barren roster that didn't have a single player drafted to the NFL after Saban's first season.
I like Saban, and I am LSU all the way...
But why do people say Miles won with "saban's" players, but they don't sya Saban won with "shula's" players....
I never have bought that arguement, EVER...but you can't have it both ways. If LSU's was talent rich when Saban left and that's why Miles won, fine...but then you MUST say that Saban had talent when he got to Bama and that's why he was able to win...

I think they're both great coaches. I tend to look at them with regard to what each program needed at the time of hiring. LSU did not need a "saban" to come in, move mountains and rebuild an entire team at the time Miles was hired. We needed a manager type coach to keep the ship on the right track. I'd argue getting to the top and being able to stay on top are completely different tasks. On the other hand, Bama needed to shake things up and start over.
So in terms of fulfilling the needs of each program, both coaches are phenomenal. We are lucky, as spectators, to get to see one helluva game each fall. And no, the series wouldn't be nearly as fun if I were lopsided.
I tend to like just about all the Bama fans I meet. They are generally likeable people. The same can't be said for all fan bases lol
