I went to high school there in the early/mid 2000’s. We did all of that, our parents just didn’t know.

No lie. One of the funnest college trips I had was a student fan trip where we tagged along with the pep band and cheerleaders to freaking Stillwater, Oklahoma. We stayed in OKC the night before. Cal was playing Oklahoma and their band and cheerleaders were in the same hotel.
Someone put it to me like this. The hardcore band geeks leave it after high school. They hate sports and after high school, band is all about football and basketball support. No more band competitions. The ones that stick with it in college are looking for additional scholarship money, and are typically pretty cool and love sports.
More piccolo girl types and less band geek types.

Not really.
I loved football. The band at my high school didn't do basketball. The problem is that everything is the sport... Even if the team sucks and the band has national recognition.
Also, when the team sucks, nothing is their fault. They'll blame the band for "being too loud" before owning up to their own limitations.
But hate sports?
That's bullshite.
