Martin Luther King Jr read Lane Kiffin's interview and after a moment of silence, Rosa Parks who sat next to Harriet Tubman started clapping, W.E.B. Du Bois joined along with Frederick Douglass.
Booker T. Washington slowly stood, just about the time Ida B. Wells and Medgar Evers also stood to their feet. As the applause grew, Thurgood Marshall threw his arms around Dorothy Height to his right and Fannie Lou Hamer to his left.
As the standing ovation continued, Benjamin E. Mays wept aloud, his head on Whitney Young's shoulder.
Roy Wilkins led a victory march and Claudette Colvin shouted like an ole time Baptist.
