There is no way for the NCAA to know what his intentions actually were by transferring.
Do you not realize how often any business or organization has to break down another person's intentions? I guess you want every person on the Earth to live on separate islands, because that is the only way we won't have to interpret intentions.
Oh, and there is a way for the NCAA to know. Because it was obvious. You know this as well as they do, so don't play dumb for the sake of arguing against something you don't like.

Mr. Paulus has expressed an interest in competing in a second sport at another Division I school
Oh he wanted to play another sport at another school? Well that seems 100% academically motivated! Approved!
The statement by them about that wasn't "Mr. Paulus has expressed an interest in ______ graduate program at....", it starts off with his interest to play a sport there.

If a student-athlete wants to transfer and immediately compete as a graduate student, the college or university they are transferring to would need to seek a waiver, because in most cases they would have to sit out a year before competing under NCAA transfer rules and would not have any remaining eligibility. One of the factors our members have determined is appropriate for a graduate student waiver is if the transfer is academically motivated.
Boom!? So interpretation of academic motivation for each individual case has been in there in writing since the beginning? Oh well, so much for that line of bitching.

His off-the-field issues have nothing to do with the transfer rules. Nowhere in the rules does it mention that you can only transfer if you have no off-the-field issues, or if you're in good standing with you're previous school.
+ infinity.
The NCAA is worried about their image and the are interpreting the rules to their liking.
Say "he deserves it" and "loophole" all you want, but that's just your righteous opinion, not an actual fact. He followed the rules, graduated early, and his off the field incidents or status at Oregon isn't in question in this regard.
Oh well

I really don't understand why any fan of any school would be happy with this. The NCAA has re-interpreted their own rules to send a message. This time it was Ole Miss, next time, it might be your school. It's obvious the only difference between Paulus and Masoli is the criminal record.

I wasn't hating on Mackey at all. He's never been anything but what he is. I actually wish him the best.

No, one was kicked off his team, that is the BIG difference. The criminal record shouldn't and didn't play a role either way. But if you are interpreting if a decision to transfer is even possibly academically motivated (and this is an academic loop hole) it's hard to even make the argument that it is an academic transfer when a player decides to transfer in the middle of the summer, a week or less after he is kicked off his his team.
Paulus didn't decide to transfer one week after being kicked off his last college team. It is 10x harder to interpret that as not an academic transfer.

Different teams have different rules

This wouldn't hurt so bad if they hadn't waited until 4 days before the first game...

If there reason was legit, it wouldn't have taken them this long to come up with it...

So the basketball player who just graduated from Ole Miss and wasn't getting along with the players and coaches, and had actually quit the team and rejoined the team, before transferring to Seton Hall and receiving his waiver was clearly tranferring based on academics? It's all based on opinion, which is why the decision is BS
