Our 2001 SEC Championship win against UT is ranked as the Vols most heartbreaking loss in recent years. See the link for the UT Top Ten biggest heartbreak losses. They really wanted to beat us bad this year as a payback.

I can understand that, but it was our payback for them beating us in 59 when we were #1.

Yes indeed. We held a grudge for 42 years and finally got payback.

I remember that game well, and how ecstatic I was when that fumble happened to seal the game.

I knew the Bama 9-6 win over UT would be on the list, but I kinda thought that the "Rocky Stop" touchback game of 2005 might make the cut too.

God, I hate Tennessee....

I was there that night. Man ,that was sweet. They had us outnumbered 3-1 and were the most arrogant, cocky, agtagonistic bunch I'd ever seen before the game.Half of the Vol women were walking around with orange roses.

I was a freshman at LSU in 59 - heartbreaking loss especially since we have many relatives in Tennessee - it took 42 years, but it was worth the wait.

Please leave Lulu and Junior alone. They live in the trailer next door to me.

Hate to flame but isn't this supposedly the story behind every LSU loss?

8. 1996: Memphis 21 - No. 6 Tennessee 17 (Memphis)

The one and only time in history the Tigers have beaten the Vols. Peyton Manning threw for 296 yards but had two interceptions. Memphis had only 153 yards of offense, but (illegally) ran a kickoff back for a touchdown late in the third quarter to tie the game at 14, and then got the yards they had to have on their final drive.

It's my understanding that this is still the single greatest event in the history of the Memphis Athletic Department.

I like how they rationalize with their loss to Memphis b/c of an "illegal" kickoff return.

Not the 1988 Miami game.

Nonetheless, the LSU contingent involved in the game maintains that Billy Cannon did cross the goal in his attempt for the two pt conversion, which was called 'no good'.He was stopped right at the goal line, and either got in by a hair,or was stopped a hair away.

I don't doubt that for a moment. We just got a new editor here at the paper, and as soon as he saw the LSU lagniard I was wearing he told me how much it still gnaws at him that LSU beat Tennessee in that 2001 SEC title game.

Of course, I told him that I have it on DVD and any time he wanted to watch I'll be glad to loan it to him.

Naturally, I went home that night and watched that game again. Well, whaddyaknow. LSU won.

You had to give it to Memphis. They wanted that game more than Tennessee on that day. The return was pretty impressive.

WRONG. I was there. We were outnumbered 6 to 1. That was a great game. We stood the whole game. Talk about exhilarating.

It's good to know we're number one on this list....but the worst LSU loss I can think of was in 2005 to them, so it evened out.

and Tennessee ( the school, not the state)

I was at that game. The kickoff return wasn't illegal, just a great play, kid kept himself up spun and was gone- UT fans cried like bitches for weeks

the LSU SECCG was incredible. UT thought they had the NC berth wrapped up. Frankly their program has not been the same since

I was there in 2001 too. We had seats near the 50 in the middle of a bunch of Vol boosters. At the beginning of the game they were talking about where they had booked their hotel rooms near Pasadena, which restaurants they were going to eat at, tourist places they were going to see. They had it all figured out.

I had my son with me, he was 4 years old at the time. Right before kick off one old guy says to my son, "You might be an LSU fan right now but you'll be a Vol fan for life after this game."

It was pure joy at the end of that game to turn around to that old man and say, " I guess he'll be an LSU fan a little longer huh? But I sure do hope you enjoy your trip to Los Angeles."

There is actually a lot of love for LSU in the Knoxville area despite the heartbreaks we've caused. I have several Tennessee fans who say that LSU is easily there second favorite team. News coverage in the Knoxville paper of LSU is pretty damn good as well.
