That's a good point.
Maybe college football needs to establish a system like college hoops has with a quadrant rating system.
Whatever they decide, they need to select an objective rating system and apply it to all teams.
You wanna schedule Western Tennessee Regional Community College? Fine, but you're only hurting your playoff chances.
I'd be in favor of something like the recruiting ranking formulas, where your best opponents (as opposed to recruits) get weighted more in the average.

Agree. Wins against top teams help you out more, and losses to top teams don't hurt quite as much.
Going simply by the Win-Loss columns just doesn't cut it when there are only 4 spots and such huge disparity in team SOS.

Why aren't NFL teams just made up of only SEC players? I mean they are clearly head and shoulders better than everyone else, so why don't they just put an SEC player at every position

Show us on the doll where the SEC touched you

Not that simple/linear but yeah, something like that. I'd probably use a Gaussian bell curve like the 247 recruiting ranking formulas do as a first attempt, then would tweak the system from there if it seemed to need tweaking.

I hate these kinds of metrics. I don’t care if one team beat #80 and the other beat # 100. After all, neither team should have any shot of beating a team that the playoff committee is considering.
I do, however, care if one team beat #5 and the other beat #25. There is a huge difference in those two teams odds of beating a top team.
Nothing outside about the top 30-40 should even count when considering SOS unless they beat you.

I don't agree completely, but I agree in spirit. I would say that how you perform against mediocre teams gives some info, just not nearly as much as how you perform against good-to-great teams.

During the CFP era, Clemson's record against the SEC is 11-2, a slate that includes 4 games against the team has gone 44-5 against its fellow conference members. Clemson will point to the sore rib cage on the doll...hurt from laughter.
