-The Memphis Tigers come to Baton Rouge after a win in the opening game against Tennessee Tech, 76-61, last Tuesday in Memphis. Memphis put a 46-31 advantage on the board at halftime, a margin which
held up for the remainder of the contest. Kyron Davenport led the Tigers with 30 points, hitting 11-
of-17 field goals, 2 treys, and 6 of 7 free throws to go with 10 rebounds. Jeremiah Martin added 18 points.

-Memphis made 31 of 74 field goal attempts and 6 of 24 three pointers to go with 8 of 11 free throws.
Memphis had 27 points off 26 Tennessee Tech turnovers.

-This is the second straight year that Memphis and LSU have played, having met last December in
Memphis, with LSU scoring a 71-61 victory. In that game Tremont Waters had 18 points, eight assists and four steals for LSU with Skylar Mays added 14 points and four assists. Davenport had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis with Martin getting 13.

-This is the eighth time the teams have met with Memphis up 4-3 in the series and they could meet
again on the final day of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando if the right things do or don’t happen. Two of the more prominent games in this series came in 1986 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Maravich Center when the late Don Redden came out of a scrum with the ball and put back a shot at
the buzzer as LSU beat Memphis, 83-81. The other came in Maui in the third place game in 1992 as Penny Hardaway helped Memphis to a 70-66 win over LSU.

-Speaking of Hardaway, the former Memphis star and NBA All-Star, is in his first year as the head coach
at Memphis. Hardaway played in the NBA for Orlando, Phoenix, New York Knicks and Miami from 1993-07 and
was a four-time NBA All-Star.

-The media from Memphis is also coming with the visiting Tigers for the game as four members of the
Commercial Appeal staff, a writer from the Daily Mississippian and two Memphis TV stations are on the credential list, not to mention 10 pro organizations that have requested credentials for the game.

LSU HOME WIN STREAK REACHES NINE
The win over UNCG gives LSU nine consecutive wins in the Maravich Center dating back to the final seven home games of a year ago. Ironically, prior to those seven wins, LSU lost three consecutive games in the building at the start of SEC play before winning its final six home games of the 2017-18 regular season and the NIT game with Louisiana.

In the history of the Maravich Center, the Tigers have had 14 streaks of 11 games or more. The last long winning streak was when LSU won the final three games of the 2007-08 season and then won the first 14 in 2008-09 for a total of 17 games, the fourth longest in the history of the Maravich Center.
LSU finished 14-4 at home last year in the Maravich Center. LSU has now with Friday night won 551
games in this the 48th year of play in the building and 253 in league play.

STARTING 2-0
The Tigers opened 2-0 for the fifth consecutive year with wins over Southeastern and UNCG. LSU will be
attempting to go 3-0 for the fourth consecutive year.

2-0 AS RANKED TEAM IN 2018-19
The win by the Tigers against UNCG makes them 2-0 as a ranked team this season. LSU was ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP poll, the first time the Tigers have been ranked since the fourth poll of the 2015-16 season (preseason and first three weeks). It marked the 199th time LSU was ranked in the AP poll. With the win over UNCG, LSU is now 262-99 when playing while ranked in the poll since the 1948-49 season. LSU is 9-3 when ranked No. 23 in the AP poll.

FREE THROW PRACTICE SEEMS TO HELPING
The Tigers last year in Will Wade’s first season shot 73.1 percent from the line (459 of 628) with Tremont Waters at 80.1 percent (117-146) and Skylar Mays at 83.7 percent (77 of 92). In the first two games LSU is 52 of 62 at the line or 83.9 percent. Naz Reid is 7 of 7, Waters 7 of 9, Ja’vonte Smart 9 of 10 and Darius Days (8 of 8) and Skylar Mays (5-5) are both perfect as well. Coach Wade in the middle of practice runs a halftime drill at about the mid-point of practice in which players shoot free throws with players also practicing block out drills against the shooter as well when they are
not shooting free throws. If the team doesn’t hit a certain percentage they run. The Tigers hit their first 22 free throws against UNCG before the first miss as they finished the game making 28 of 31. In the first two games, LSU opponents are just 16 of
28 at the stripe.

HAVE TIGERS LEARNED TO FINISH?
One thing that LSU will look to improve during the 2018-19 season is the ability to finish games. Although LSU had late finishes on defense against Houston and the win at Texas A&M that involved last second plays, there were six games and an SEC Tournament game that LSU will look back on as games that they would have liked to have swung back in their favor:

(H) Kentucky – L, 74-71 – LSU up 7, 19:39 to play; two shots to tie in final seven seconds.

(H) Alabama – L, 66-74 – LSU up 5, 7:27 1st half; Down 15 2nd half, cut it to four final minutes.

(H) Georgia – L, 60-61 – LSU up 12, 4:10 1st half; Up 10 at half; 3 pter to win misses final seconds.

(A) Vandy – L, 71-77 – Vandy led 16, 16:54 2nd half; LSU takes lead, 2:21 left but cannot keep lead.

(A) Florida – L, 64-73 – LSU up at half, 33-31; Fell behind 12 2nd half, took 2 leads in final 7 minutes.

(A) Carolina – L, 74-83 – LSU 15 down in final 8 minutes to get tie, force OT; scores 2 in extra session

(N) Miss. State – L, 77-80 – LSU down 19 with 2:21 first half, closes to one with nine seconds left.

Memphis vs LSU. Surely this is some bizarro world for Arkansas fans... no matter who loses we win!

Nah. I'll be cheering for LSU in this one as well.
