Poverty rates can be misleading because the same income thresholds are used across all states without factoring in the cost of living.
If a married couple living in Jackson, MS makes $20K per year, they are considered to be below the poverty line.
If a married couple living in San Francisco, CA makes $25k per year, they are NOT considered to be below the poverty line.
The Jackson couple would certainly be poor, but the SF couple would literally be homeless.
Neither is good, but saying one lives in poverty and one doesn't is asinine.

If we excluded the delta from these stats, that number would go down by at least 10.

I was specifically referring to "student-athletes" from the University of Alabama. For example, Henry Ruggs and the members of the 2023 Alabama basketball team.

My girlfriend is from Sweden and she thinks most Americans are wealthy too.
I keep telling her life in the USA is a struggle
Europe is taxed to death but they get free medical care and unemployment and like 4 months a year vacation.
Most of them think we are all nuts and fat from McDonalds lol

What does Mizzou have? STL is a ghetto trash area. Springfield is trash.
Kansas City is poor. The dang Chiefs owner doesn’t even live there.
What is a nice city is MO? Branson I guess?

1. Louisiana (19.5)

3. Alabama (16.3)
4. Kentucky (16.3)
5. Arkansas (16)
6. Oklahoma (15.4)
7. South Carolina (14.5)
8. Georgia (14.2)
9. Texas (14.2)
10. Tennessee (13.7)
11. Florida (13.2)
12 Missouri (12.8)
Sad, just more proof Mizzou doesn’t fit in the SEC
This list is probably dumb.
The poverty rate is just the % of people below the "poverty line", but it probably doesn't take cost of living into account.

This.
The difference in cost of living between California and the south is huge, and yet these kinds of lists incorrectly pretend like the south has more poverty.
It doesn't.
